Liar
A FAMILIAR PARABLE
Once, many years ago, a nine year old boy named Yossi was playing in the yard behind the barn. While running around, he somehow managed to knock over the outhouse.
Yossi was upset and worried that he would get into trouble, so he ran into the woods and didn’t return home until after dark. When he arrived back home, his grandmother was waiting for him. Grandmother asked suspiciously, “Yossi, did you knock over the outhouse this afternoon?”
Yossi lied and said, “No, I didn't grandma ,”
“Well, let me tell you a story,” said grandmother . “When I was nine years old, I received a shiny new axe from my Papa. Excited, I tried it out on a tree, and chopped it down. But when I looked at the tree, I realized it was my Nanna’s favorite cherry tree.
Just like you, I ran into the woods. When I returned, my Papa asked, “Did you chop down the cherry tree?” I answered, "Papa, I cannot tell a lie. I did chop down the tree." Then my Papa said, 'Well, since you were honest with me, I will spare you from punishment this time.
So, grandmother asked Yossi again, "Did you knock over the outhouse?”
“Grandma , I cannot tell a lie any more.” said Yossi. “I did knock over the outhouse.”
Then grandmother gave Yossi a slap that the boy would not likely forget.
Yossi whimpered, "grandma I told you the truth! I did knock over the outhouse. Why did you spank me?” "Your Papa didn't spank you."
Grandmother answered, “That’s because my Papa wasn’t in the tree when I chopped it down!”
