Latest Centrelink boost falls short, Aussies demand more action from the government

As the cost of living continuously rises, any increase in Centrelink payments is typically welcomed.

The Australian government has recently announced a six per cent increase in Centrelink payments, which will affect almost one million recipients.

Despite the increase, there's a growing consensus that this measure is simply not enough to make a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Cassandra Goldie, CEO of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), has been vocal about the inadequacy of the current increase.

In an interview, she acknowledged that while every extra dollar helps, it ‘does not get these key payments to the level that will lift people out of poverty'.

ACOSS's research towards the end of last year painted a grim picture of the struggles faced by those relying on Centrelink payments.

'Our cost of living research…showed people relying on these kinds of payments were going without food; they were going without heating and cooling,' Ms Goldie shared.

'We want to see action,' she added.

'We do want the government to go much further with its approach to tackling [the] cost of living [crisis], particularly for people on the very lowest incomes.'

This comes after news that those on the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, and Carer Payments will receive a much-needed increase in their payments starting from the 20th of September, 2023.

Under this initiative, each single pensioner would see an increase of $32.70 per fortnight, while couples will get an increase of $49.40 ($24.70 each). You can read more about this here.

Adding to these cost of living relief initiatives, around 782,000 people on JobSeeker saw a $40 increase in payment each fortnight, while 222,000 Australians on Youth Allowance and about 64,000 families on Partnered Parenting also saw an increase in payments.

This additional relief is estimated to cost the government $4.7 billion.

While the increase seemed substantial, experts said that the current system still leaves pensioners lagging behind inflation.

National Seniors Australia Chief Advocate Ian Henschke stated: 'More can be done to support older people doing it tough, as recent National Seniors research showed a greater proportion of people with low incomes and those who are renting are suffering from cost-of-living pressures.’

'What we need is additional targeted support for people with limited means.'

'We will continue to fight for a system that improves people's lives.'
Key Takeaways
  • Almost one million Centrelink recipients will receive a six per cent increase in their payments.
  • ACOSS CEO Cassandra Goldie commented that while every dollar helps, the increase is insufficient to lift people out of poverty.
  • Research showed that individuals relying on such payments are foregoing basic needs like food and heating.
  • There are calls for the government to take more significant action to address the cost of living for those on the lowest incomes.

Wasn't able to download your attachment,.but I did find that
7News article myself, but that $40 a fortnight was announced in the August Budget and came into effect on 20th Sept.2023.
Obviously, if Centrelink told him he is getting an increase then he is, but I know people who aren't.
I didn't mean to offend him, I just knew that they had not mentioned Jobseeker, and he seemed so happy that he would be getting extra I felt I should let him know that that didn't appear to be the case. Don't think there was any need for the narky response and name calling
Guess I'll just mind my own business and keep what I thought were good intentions to myself next time.

They allow pensioners who are well to earn more money, but the disabled are not allowed to have more money in their bank accounts and they probaably have more bills to pay because they can't do anything much for themselves.
My daughter is on a disability pension and lives with me, so over the years she has managed to build up quite a healthy bank. There is no restriction on having money in your bank account, only after you have over a certain amount,(which is quite a reasonable amount) does your pension start to reduce.

i would like to know why increases in centrelinc payments in SEPTEMBER were %3.2 for the aged %6 for the unemployed and %15 for single parents and where the govt came up with only %3.2 cost of living in the previous 6 months does the unemployed and single parents deserve to get increases more than the disabled and the aging population and if so why
Why are the single parents rewarded for having children they cannot afford and people who are on the dole after 12 months are getting rewarded for doing nothing
Meanwhile most of the older generation who worked and paid their way most of their lives are getting screwed over
treated worse than
Also, the miserly $8 rise in carer allowance. The carer payment is so hard to get these days, most people are given the carer allowance which is much lower.
I know several people who are caring virtually full time for parents
but Centrelink, in their warped wisdom, say they don't qualify.
The carer allowance wouldn't even cover a days cost if these people were in residential care, let alone a fortnight.
Carers save the government multi millions every year and $8 is the thanks they get, while our politicians flit around in chauffeur driven cars, clocking up hundreds of thousands of dollars, when they could just as easily drive themselves.
.

My, you do have a nasty streak, or should I say catty streak, meeow
I actually do listen to what people are saying, nearly all of whom were saying the same as me, which was that there was no announcement of an increase in Jobseeker in this current lot of rises.
Obviously for some reason you are getting a rise and I'm glad for you as you sound as though you need it, as do most people.
Maybe you should read articles in the vein they were written and not stoop to the level of name calling, which says more about you than me
There was no need for the backhanded apology, which you decided to add, but at least you thought it was funny, which as I said speaks loads of you.

Thanks.ive just found out it’s for the increase in my rent.and it’s only $35.64c that I’m getting so it won’t cover my increase of $50.00 a fortnight. But it’s better than nothing.” Right.😊

No it's not enough I struggle from fortnight to fortnight, the government needs to do something about capping rent prices.

Certainly better than nothing, but it does seem that these increases do nothing to keep up with inflation and people are just going backwards.l

No matter what the increase, it will never be enough. It's a vicious circle as someone once said. When Centrelink gives an increase, up go the costs again!
The problem is to be fixed at the start where it comes from. The Greedy Greedy People Must Change Their Attitude and reduce their Greed by about 90%, so Humans can live a reasonable life while we all are alive.
Not just my words I'm passing them on.

G’day Bridgit, I Wonder how many peanuts we’ll get thrown ?? Should be similar to last years ? Because of the cost of living currently we’re all suffering!!
Cost of living is mostly about Greedy people, who want More Money, so that many others end up living a Nervous Life.

you are right it is all about money
THE more companies make and the more prices go up GOVT REVENUE GOES UP
The last pension rise went up %3.2 for pensioners %6for the unemployed
%15 for single mothers
I think what single parents got everyone should of got as it was closer to actual inflation
If the next pay increase is the same as the the last increase it would mean the govt is saying inflation for the whole year is %6.4 last increase
WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP
GOOD FOR THE UNEMPLOYED AND SINGLE PARENTS AS THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN 5 EXTRA INCREASEPAYMENTS ON TOP OF THE 6 MONTHLY INCREMENTS
PENSIONERS AND THE DISABLED AND CARERS SWEET F--K ALL
THE ELDERLY ARE A DYING BREED WHO BUILT THIS COUNTRY AND AFTER WORKING ALL THEIR LIVES GET SHAFTED IN THEIR RETIREMENT
