Kmart shoppers outraged over this ‘time-wasting' feature: ‘Hate them where they are’

Kmart has long been a beloved one-stop shop for Australians looking for quality goods at affordable prices. From fashion to furniture, toys to tools, Kmart seems to have it all.

But even the most loyal of customers can find themselves at odds with their favorite retailer, especially when changes to the shopping experience seem to hinder rather than help.

The latest uproar? The positioning of Kmart's checkouts.

In a move that has left many shoppers scratching their heads, Kmart has placed the checkouts in the middle of the store rather than near the exits as is traditional.

This decision has sparked a wave of frustration among customers, who have taken to social media to voice their concerns.

One social media user posed a question that quickly garnered hundreds of responses: 'Do you like the checkouts in the middle of the store, or would you like them back near the door?'

The consensus was clear, with many calling for a return to the old layout.

One shopper's comment encapsulated the general sentiment: 'Near the door. What a s****d idea to have you walk back through the store with purchased items instead of the door people seeing who has come straight from checkout and who has not.’

‘And no, I'm not stopping in a line of people for them to scan my receipt, I'm walking out the door.'

‘Back near the door, it's crazy having to have big lines to get receipts scanned,’ another said.

‘If it was at the door, this wouldn't be as big of a deal. Also, have more than one staff member at checkouts to help with machine errors.’

‘I'd prefer full-service registers with staff members as opposed to self-serve at the front,’ a third suggested.

Other shoppers said they ‘hate them where they are’ and don’t like using ‘self-checkouts’.

Even experts in consumer behaviour are baffled by Kmart's decision.

Paul Harrison, Professor of Consumer Behaviour and Marketing at Deakin University, was ‘flummoxed’, stating that there seems to be no scientific evidence supporting the move.

‘It's interesting because I don't think that there's any scientific evidence would say that it was a good decision,’ Paul said.

‘It may well have been a gut feeling. I think part of it might have been that they thought, if we keep people in the centre of the store, they'll buy more.’

‘But yeah, when it first happened, I kind of just went looking at all the research, the actual research, not marketing consultants, and yeah, I couldn't see the reason why they would do that.’

‘If anything, I guess one of the critical things in marketing often is about kind of removing friction,’ he added.

‘So what that means is make it as easy as possible for people to do the thing you want them to do. And I think, if anything, it adds friction.’

‘And yeah, it's a mystery to me as a person who researches how consumers actually behave. It is one of those moments where I just went, I don't know where that came from, so yes, I'm flummoxed.’

Paul said he is ‘looking for reasons’ why Kmart made this decision.

‘Because that's my field, it's not just me as a customer, it's me as a person who researches the theory. And I just can't think of a reason. I'd love to know what their reasoning was and what the evidence was that led to that [choice],’ he said.

Kmart, for its part, has indicated that the central checkout layout, which has been gradually introduced since 2015, aims to streamline queues and reduce congestion at exits.

However, a trial at Eastlands Shopping Centre in Melbourne saw the checkout moved closer to the exit, suggesting that the retailer is open to experimentation and customer feedback.

A Kmart spokesperson has emphasised the company's commitment to improving customer experience by saying the layout change in Eastlands was only a trial and they have no plans to roll out the change nationwide.

‘We have lots of things we do to try to improve customer experience, such as new technology. We test and learn from things,’ the spokesperson said.

‘At Kmart Eastland, we are looking to try out a range of new store elements and ideas over the next year or so.’

'As a business, we are always looking for ways to make our customer experience better, so trying out new things is just part of what we do.'

‘As always, we have a number of trials taking place involving lots of new ideas so we can see what our customers think. As these are rolled out, we look forward to hearing our customer feedback so we can continue to adapt and improve.’
Key Takeaways

  • Kmart shoppers have expressed disappointment over the location of checkouts, positioned at the centre of the store, which they find inconvenient.
  • Customers and a consumer behaviour expert are baffled by the store's decision, with the expert describing it as adding friction to the shopping experience.
  • Kmart trialled a different layout at Eastlands Shopping Centre in Melbourne, moving checkouts closer to the exit to improve customer experience.
  • Kmart is open to customer feedback and continuously trials new store elements and ideas to enhance the shopping experience for their customers.
Have you shopped at a Kmart with central checkouts? Do you prefer the traditional layout with checkouts near the exits, or do you think the central checkouts have their own advantages? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

It doesn't matter where the checkout is as it's a waste of time having to line up or have any staff member scan your receipt, they never check or even look in the bag or trolley. You could pay for a few items walk back through the store fill the trolley and they happily scan your receipt and wish you a happy day and you are out.

I have always thought this a stupid idea. Sometimes, I see things as I am walking out of the store, and I won't go back to the check-out to purchase this item, so I leave without it. That is one less sale for K Mart and I will not use self-serve check-outs. I will walk out of the store if there is no-one to serve me.

I agree, I’ve always thought the placement of the checkouts was a stupid move. I also regularly see things I would buy on my way out of the shop but can’t be bothered going back to the checkouts. They must lose so many sales with the loss of impulse buyers.

After you leave the checkout this is when many 5 finger discounts take over as they are there only to scan your ot check the quantity of goods on it

This is nothing new, they've been in the centre of the store for years.
It doesn't bother me, nor do I care if I have to show my receipt etc
Such stupid little things to get upset about when there are some many real dramas going on in the world.
We could be living in African countries and starving, or war-torn countries getting bombed, but no we've got bigger things to worry about.
The KMart checkouts are in the middle of the store, for heaven's sake, get a grip!!

I never use self checkouts and will stand there holding up the queue, sorry, til someone serves me. They don't pay me enough to do the work. And I hate the positioning in the middle of the store. This is one reason I actually avoid Kmart unless there is a specific sale item I really want in a catalogue.

I thought "oh, that's interesting, where are the checkouts" After wandering around the store filling my arms with possible purchases (forgot to get a trolley) I walked to the door area but there was no one but a couple of people standing at the door. I ambled over to the door people and said I want to buy this lot (I think I dropped a couple of pairs of socks somewhere). The rather annoyed doorperson said you would need to go to the checkouts so I said well where are they? Doorperson pointed to the middle of the store where I saw this enormous circular red sign hanging from the ceiling, What an idiot I thought to myself. Anyone should have seen the checkout sign but no, not me, Anyhow I ambled up again to the big red circle, dropping various items as I went as I had bought too much to carry. Finally, I am stood under the big red circle but had no checkouts, After a bit of study it became apparent that the Roofhanging person was not coordinating very well with the Grounddisplay person or they just did not like each other. The sign was not over the checkouts but was over the next alleyway.
I looked for a staff member to try to get help but Dallas there was none to be found, it was about 11.00 am so I guess it would be tea-break time. Eventually, I worked out that if I turned left and left again then right and right again I would end up at the entry to the checkouts, yay. So off I went dropping (accidentally) more items from my pile. Got to the checkouts after a few meters of displays of chocolate bars and etc. Put my pile of goods in the checkout area to start the process of checking out. It asked me something about bags which I answered and then it told me to call an assistant to help me. I thought why did we not have one in the first place like we used to? There were no assistants. I left my pile of goods because I had lost interest in living at that point then I walked to the exit to be told that I could not leave on that side because the arrows were not pointing in that direction and we needed to see your receipt. I showed them my Woolworths receipt from a previous purchase and they liked it and allowed me to pass through Area 51 with the arrows pointing in the wrong direction. Never been back since,

Kmart at Booragoon Westfield, Perth, has the centrally positioned self serve checkouts AND self serve checkouts at the exit. It's amazing that most shoppers do not realise that the exit checkouts exist!

An aside. What is wrong with the change dispensers at Kmart self serve checkouts? First time I was caught out was when the checkout gave me 85 cents change - all in 5 cents pieces! Another time, 90 cents was comprised of a mix of 5 and 10 cents! And why don't checkouts dispense 50 cent pieces? Umm....

Who would have thought the placement of checkouts would be such a contentious issue!!!
Thought there would have been more important things to worry about??
Don’t like where the checkouts are, shop somewhere else….stop spending money on low quality products…

These machines are built overseas, where the 50 cents shape and size is not relevant…so the machines can process the coin in, and cannot distribute it back out of the machine..
Not sure how reliable this is, I remember reading it somewhere…makes “perfect” sense to me 😊😊

It is strange that self serve checkouts are able to process 50 cent pieces when you pay but unable to dispense as change. I have never had a problem with presenting a 50 cent piece to such checkouts.

Our KMart has had checkouts in the middle of the store for years, it poses no problems at all. I had a good laugh at the "expert" saying there is no scientific reason 🤔 to change the checkouts, what part of this need scientific reasoning??? Also, this is just another example of how people no longer have patience for anything. If it takes more than a nano second they can't cope with it.

If marketing people and research people can't understand why the registers are in the middle of the store you would think K mart would have consulted and listened and stopped putting them there if it does not make sense.

I LOATHE KMart’s absolutely ludicrously placed checkouts in the middle of the store.
Idiotic! Moronic!
The staff hate it!
We hate it!
It BLOCKS our access to other areas!
It forces us to have to detour a large distance away from products we intended to see, or buy !
Many hv just given up in disgust and left the store to shop elsewhere!
Put the blasted Checkouts at the entry/exit point and leave them there!
