Kitchen chaos: When pizza sauce goes boom!

Imagine waking up one morning, ready to start your day, only to come across a sight straight out of a horror film: your kitchen and living room splattered with red.

That's exactly what happened to Caitlin-Rose Wilkinson, an Aussie mum. But don't worry, it wasn't a crime scene—just a runaway bottle of Woolworths Pizza Sauce!

Mum Caitlin-Rose was in for a shock when she discovered streaks of sauce all over her walls and ceiling. It looked like someone had drawn a map using tomato sauce!

The mess was so bad that she had to call in a professional cleaner. Unfortunately, even with their help, there's still a mark on the ceiling that will need a fresh coat of paint.

So, what caused this saucy explosion? Caitlin-Rose suspects it all started because she forgot to put the sauce in the fridge overnight. She thinks that leaving it out allowed the sauce to ferment and build up gases, eventually leading to a messy explosion.

From the looks of it, the force of the explosion caused the bottle of sauce to, ‘rocket ship’ across the whole house!’ It bounced off the kitchen counter, then the sink, before finally launching into the air and through the light fixture into the hallway. Talk about a wild ride for a humble bottle of sauce!

Experts like Thomas Hartman, a Food Chemist from Rutgers University, explain that ‘When you get expansion and containers blowing up, a lot of the time it's from gas build-up within the container, and that's usually a red flag for microbial growth.’ That pressure can lead to explosions like the one Caitlin-Rose experienced.

That's why it's important to follow the advice of stores like Woolworths and refrigerate your pizza sauce once it's opened. Keeping it cool slows down microbial growth and reduces the risk of explosions.

Caitlin-Rose isn't alone in her saucy mishap. After she shared her sauce explosion ordeal, many people chimed in with their own tales of household havoc.

One person recounted, ‘Similar experience with homemade wine. Woke up to a pink (originally white) and traumatised cat, and my kitchen looked like a murder scene.’

Another shared, ‘My sister did an insurance claim for when a similar thing happened with a 2-litre juice she had in her pantry. They covered the costs of her cleaners and repainting her ceilings.’

And a third person added, ‘This happened to me and [tomato sauce] in the pantry... the mess was contained but it was still a MESS.’

And it's not just pizza sauce—in 2019, Sriracha Hot Chilli Sauce was recalled because of fears that bottles could explode due to fermentation. So next time you're tempted to leave that bottle of sauce out, remember Caitlin-Rose's messy ordeal and stick it in the fridge instead!

Key Takeaways
  • Caitlin-Rose Wilkinson found her home covered in red sauce after a bottle of Woolworths Pizza Sauce exploded overnight.
  • Leaving the sauce bottle out caused fermentation, leading to pressure buildup and the eventual explosion. Experts warn about the risks of microbial growth in opened sauce containers.
  • Others shared similar experiences of household explosions, including incidents with homemade wine, juice, and tomato sauce.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale for all of us. It's a reminder to heed storage instructions on food products and to be aware of the silent, but potentially destructive, process of fermentation that can occur in our very own kitchens.

I had a Heinz ketchup bottle explode just the other week. I am wondering if it also has something to do with these upside down style of bottles. I have never stored my tomato sauce in the fridge never before have i had a problem. Certainly made a mess, even all over me and my still wet hair.

I absent mindedly put my Woollies Pissa Sauce bottle (with the lid side up) in the cupboard while cleaning up and it exploded covering everything on the shelf including the frosted glass doors. I had been away for a couple of days and with the hot weather literally baked on to everything.

No never heard of it but it is scary It’s only so many years ago that it was put on tomato sauce labels to refrigerate after opening . Before that just kept in pantry .

Although I feel for this woman, why would she want to film herself with a silly smile on her face upon being met with this disaster in the morning. I can assure you that the last thing on my mind would be filming myself as it wouldn't have been a smile on my face but a look of complete shock and dismay at the mess. The look on her face to me seemed to be one of something funny just happened, not a disaster of a bottle of sauce exploding all over the house. I dropped a bottle of soy sauce onto my kitchen floor many years ago but didn't feel the need to film it and put it on TikTok. The 'joys' of Social Media.

Oh well she got people talking about it though didn’t she.😊

Speaking of tomatoes.i store mine in the lids of 2 egg containers put together. Start off on the bench to ripen then put in fridge and they’ll last last for a couple of weeks.anyone else do this works a treat and no more throwing toms away.👍
And no it’s not a tik tok idea it came from that thing between my ears called a brain.🤣

WOW. Reminds me of the plastic kettle that exploded mid boil, luckily no one was in the kitchen at the time or it would have been far worse than a watery clean up.

Hope the stains came out from the sauce.

I have never had this happen to me.

Maybe if she cleaned the mess straight away rather than filming herself then it would have washed off.

I remember my grandmother cooking with a pressure cooker and that exploding . The lid flew off like a bullet and the mess of that was bad.
That actually stopped me from ever using a pressure cooker.

I have never used a pressure cooking for that self same reason. They are way too dangerous.

Years ago the valve blew out of my pressure cooker and blew a piece of wallpaper off the wall. More recently, well about 5 years ago, I opened a can of baked beans and the beans exploded out of the can. They went all over the cupboard, floor and me. I got in touch with a representative of the company and was told that baked beans don't have a use-by date but from the code, she said they were 5 years old but it shouldn't have happened. She sent me a $10 gift card.

I really have to wonder at some people...just how long did she leave it..because I very much doubt that happens overnight...please tell the full story not half of it..!
