Keep your fruits fresh in the fridge for LONGER with this storage trick!

Most of us here would agree that having fresh fruits in our homes is just the best thing ever. It's so nice being able to whip up a plateful of our favourite berries for a quick midday pick-me-up snack, maybe even pair them with nuts and yoghurt (yum!).

However, one bad thing about fresh produce is that it spoils easily.

We buy our favourite berries from the store, place them in the fridge, and within only a few days, they are all squishy and mouldy before we get the chance to pop them in a salad.

Fortunately for us, people online have been sharing the solution for storing fruit that will help keep it fresher for way longer.

Turns out, all we need are glass jars!

We were so accustomed to storing fresh fruits and produce in plastic containers or bags from the store that we may have not realised that these packages often let in air and bacteria, which quickly starts the decomposition process.

According to a tip floating around Facebook, using airtight glass jars makes the fruits stay fresher, juicier, and crisper for two weeks longer than if they were stored in plastic containers from the supermarket.

"I tried it and will never go back, it keeps the fruit fresh forever," said the 25-year-old Sandra, a regular shopper and consumer of fresh produce.

Sandra shared the hack with thousands of fellow shoppers on Facebook and many revealed that they too follow the same storage method.

"This really does work! Works well for cut fruit and vegetables too," wrote one user. Another agreed and added that they have been doing this for years, saying: "Fruit stays as fresh as the day you buy it due to no moisture getting inside the jar."

In one of our previous storage tips articles, we also advise washing and rinsing your berries before storing them!

Thoroughly rinse your berries in cold water (with a little bit of white vinegar), which helps them stay crisp and not turn mushy. Plus, this method removes bacteria and tiny bugs which may come with the fresh produce.

Then, simply rinse and drain them in a metal colander and place them on a row of paper towels to dry. Pat the berries and slightly roll them around with paper towels to absorb moisture. Storing them wet invites mould, and nobody wants that.

Once they are as dry as possible, pile them into glass jars and seal the airtight lids. Store these jars in the fridge and be amazed at how long your fruit stays fresh!

Airtight glass jars and mason jars are available at local retail stores and supermarkets so make sure you grab yourselves a few in your next shop!

Don't waste money buying new jars, the ones you have from your other produce will do fine, that way you can use the appropriate size for the produce you wish to store, instead of filling the fridge up with oversized containers. Berries only come in small packets so small vegemite jars are great, that way you are not opening a larger container to get a small amount out and letting in air.
