Karl Stefanovic spills the beans on his return to Today following a glamorous Paris wedding

Good news for Karl Stefanovic fans: the host of The Today Show is set to make a comeback to our morning screens this week. After taking a hiatus to attend a close friend's wedding in Paris, the 48-year-old TV personality told a news source that he's now 'fat and rested and ready to rumble'.

'Brekkie TV is a marathon. A really fun marathon where you don't run. My kind of marathon. I'm ready to rip in!' he said.

Karl also made a cheeky remark about his holiday weight gain after basking in the luxury of his friends' Parisian nuptials. 'Does anyone know how to lose 10 kilos in one night?' he joked.

In his absence, Charles Croucher and James Bracey have been filling in for the TV veteran on The Today Show. Impressively, Today has seen its strongest ratings in four weeks during Karl's hiatus, with viewership peaking at 191,760 on Monday.

However, Sunrise isn't far behind. The breakfast show received new energy from the recent arrival of host Matt Shirvington, who replaced David 'Kochie' Koch.

With Shirvington at the helm, Sunrise managed to draw a whopping 245,192 viewers, outperforming Today by a considerable 66,000 viewers across the five capital cities on June 12. By June 19, the gap had widened by an additional 10,000 viewers.

Karl's European holiday and the reason for his short break from the breakfast show centred around the opulent Paris wedding of millionaire chicken heiress Tamie Ingham and renowned chef Guillaume Brahimi.

The TV host and Brahimi have been friends for quite some time, having been introduced by mutual acquaintance James Packer. In a stunning display of friendship, Stefanovic served as emcee at the extravagant two-day event, which culminated in a lavish reception at the famous Maxim's bistro.

Karl's wife, Jasmine, accompanied him to the French capital, where the couple enjoyed various pre-wedding events, adding a touch of glamour to their trip. The pair first attended a welcome soirée at the well-known Girafe Paris restaurant before making their way to the sprawling Museum Mondee for the main ceremony.

Living the high life indeed, Karl and Jasmine resided at Hotel Costes, where rooms go for an astounding $13,000 per night.

Key Takeaways

  • Karl Stefanovic will return to his hosting duties on The Today Show this week after attending a society wedding in Paris.
  • The TV personality joked about his holiday weight gain, saying, 'I'm fat and rested and ready to rumble.'
  • With Stefanovic's absence, Today has experienced its strongest ratings in four weeks, although it still faces competition from Sunrise.
  • Karl and his wife Jasmine attended the lavish society wedding of millionaire chicken heiress Tamie Ingham and chef Guillaume Brahimi, where Stefanovic served as emcee.

Meanwhile, David Koch leaves behind a significant legacy, but experts are confident that Matt Shirvington has what it takes to maintain Sunrise's leading position.

Steve Allen, a seasoned media analyst from the independent media agency Pearman Media, believes that the former Australian sprint star is more relatable than his counterpart on Today, Karl Stefanovic.

According to Allen, Matt is a suitable successor to Koch primarily because both men are genuinely relatable and do not seem inclined towards personal life dramas like Karl. Despite his undeniable charm, Karl Stefanovic has faced his fair share of personal controversies, which have garnered public attention.

Allen pointed out that Stefanovic often appears 'inauthentic' and constantly tries to conceal some mischievous behaviour. 'Hardly a year goes by that Karl isn't involved in some snafu.'

'He's always seen at upscale social events, seeking out an A-list group of friends,' Mr. Allen added. These tendencies might not resonate well with viewers who seek more relatable content in the morning.

Fans of Stefanovic and The Today Show eagerly anticipate the entertaining tales and anecdotes the host will share from his time off-screen. But what about you, dear readers? I won't watch Today because of Karl, I really can't stand the man
I've only recently started to enjoy Sunrise, now that Koche has left, I couldn't stand him either
Shirvo is great, fun and not cringeworthy
Oh I can't stand David Campbell either lol
I know I sound pathetic but that's my personal preference

I stopped watching Today many years ago because of Karl's behaviour. I started watching Sunrise & it would take a real disaster from that team to make me go back to watching Today. The only thing I can't stand with Sunrise is Sam Mac. He thinks he is funny but is a big fail. Thank goodness for the ability to turn the sound off when he starts his nonsense so I don't have to listen to him.

Karl is the reason that people aren’t watching. Giving him a second chance was an error. He is so full of his own importance and not funny. He has a very irritating voice as well. I would never watch a show with him in it. I’ve watched sunrise for a very long time, and Matt is just great and very personable. Sadly Nat should have been kept on the news as she is annoying with a voice to go with it. She makes silly remarks to get attention.

Refuse to watch Sunrise, between Sam ' not that funny' Mac and Ms 'boring' Baaaa, its like watching the grass grow.

We could not watch Kosh as he comes across as a real snob with no idea as to how the “common “ people lived but since Shirvo took over as the main host the quality of the show has improved dramatically and is now a show to which everyone can relate to whereas Karl and whoever hosts channels 10 are concerned their shows are relatively CRAP not worth watching.

Karl maybe a manchild but he is far better than Kochie ever was. Today was much better when Ally was his co-host though it was the absolute best when Lisa Wilkinson was there - she and Karl had the best fun together and Lisa did a wonderful job of reigning in the manchild (although Ally was good at it too). Now with Sarah Abo it isn't near as good. She's trying to hard to copycat others in every way.

As for Sunrise, I'm glad that old fuddy-duddy Kochie is gone he was so boring!! I'd rather watch paint dry than Sunrise when he was on it and would find the paint more entertaining. Still Sunrise is boring. I can't stand the bobble heads on it (ones who tilt their heads side to side) plus they all need to sit on their hands, cut out the use of 'Like' and 'Yeah-nah' as every second word (no matter which show it is on which channel).
Yeah-nah isn't even a word! don't people realise it is a contradiction! anyone who says it is literally saying 'yes-no' - geez make your mind up and pick one or the other it is so annoying and way, way, way overused and stupid!

Back to the Sunrise or Today debate though, i couldn't really be bothered with both even though i prefer Today. Shirvo is not that interesting.

Karl stefanovic is so up himself . Wasn’t it not long he lost weight in a very short time. What is the point of losing weight and then fooling around and go overboard with enormous meals and obviously Infused with alcohol . Can’t stand watching the today show and do not watch anything in the morning , just wasting my time .
