Is your Kia putting you at risk? Urgent recall warns of a dangerous seatbelt issue

Road safety is a serious business, and for that reason, it’s vital to pay attention to all car recall notices to ensure everyone’s safety while on the road.

Kia has recalled nearly 200 Sorento SUVs due to fears that a standard seatbelt component could explode in the event of an accident.

In affected Sorento models from 2020-2022, there's a risk that part of the seatbelt housing, called the pre-tensioner safety cap, could explode and shoot metal fragments at high speed to anyone inside the car.

The seatbelt pre-tensioner in question is a system designed to instantly tighten the seat belt during a crash, reducing occupant movement and improving safety.

However, it seems that due to a manufacturing issue, the part may shatter when deployed in the event of an accident, potentially causing further damage to the driver and other passengers.

The recall affects 167 vehicles already on the roads. But as Kia warned in an issued statement, 'Owners of affected vehicles should immediately contact their preferred Kia dealer to schedule an appointment to have the repair work undertaken, free of charge.'

Concerned owners who want more information may also contact Kia’s Customer Service at 131 542 or email them at [email protected].

You can check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the affected units here.

In similar news, 307 units of 2023 Ford Pumas have been recalled nationally, as some crucial safety components, such as the airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners, may fail to function properly—leading to deadly consequences.

According to the recall notice from the Department of Infrastructure, 'During the manufacturing process, the Restraint Control Module (RCM) was loaded with an incorrect configuration.'

Ford Australia reportedly sold 1,389 Puma units locally between January and the start of September 2023. The recall covers around 22 per cent of the total units sold.
