Is this the future of shopping? Coles rolls out new technology for shoppers

In a world where technology is constantly reshaping our daily lives, it eventually bleeds into mundane tasks like shopping.

One supermarket took a bold step into the future of grocery shopping thanks to one technological innovation.

This move could revolutionise the way Australians shop, combining convenience with innovative budgeting tools.

This is the promise of Coles' new trolleys powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

In an announcement, the AI-equipped trolleys are scheduled to debut in Coles' Richmond Traders store by January 2025.

These trolleys may look like the standard ones used by shoppers, but they're anything but ordinary.

The child seats have been replaced by an interactive screen that serves as a shopper's assistant.

The screen should also display store information, such as aisle numbers and in-store specials.

A built-in sensor would scan each product placed on the trolley.

It could also tally the total cost in real time, allowing shoppers to manage their budgets as they go.

The trolleys would also be equipped with a built-in scale—ideal for weighing fresh produce and meats.

For shoppers with the Coles App on their phones or Flybuys members, the trolleys offer a bonus.

Shoppers can play Spin the Wheel on the screen for exclusive savings on their purchases of $50 or more.

Lastly, there's no need to queue once shoppers are ready to check out.

The trolley includes a payment terminal, letting shoppers pay on their own on the spot.

Coles' Chief Digital Officer Ben Hassing explained that the smart trolleys should help customers 'save time, manage their budget and checkout faster or at their own pace'.

David McIntosh, Instacart's Chief Connected Stores Officer, echoed this sentiment.

'With cost-of-living pressures top of mind, we've found customers especially love the way the digital screen on the trolley helps them to see their running total and manage their budget in real time,' Mr McIntosh added.

This trial could be a significant leap forward in the integration of AI technology into everyday activities.

This could mean less time spent in stores, more control over spending, and a more enjoyable shopping experience overall.

They are doing everything they can to cut down labour and face to face customer service. Yet their prices keep going up. As with any new technology there are "bugs", so that wastes a customer's time too. Even now, there is still hold ups at self checkout areas. Imagine being in the middle of the supermarket, waiting for someone authorised, to clear and recode the trolley computer??. When I can, I like the experience of shopping at independent supermarkets, like IGA, for me a friendly, better feel and without must cost difference. Some will still have staff to assist you with taking items to your car. Not all customer services have disappeared due predatory corporate greed.

Just another way to gather your data and info. They can find what you like to buy over time and adjust the price on the trolley as you go - just another way to gouge more money from the poor people. Prices will change as you walk through the store. And how are they going to let you take these to the carpark? Naughty teens will have a ball stealing these - they can strip them for parts and dump them in the river when done. I don't know if this has been well-thought out or if it is their answer to get out of having to explain all the profiteering they have been doing. Down down!
I know they are dark thoughts, but I can't imagine the stores doing something for the customers out of the kindness of their hearts. SMH. Rant over. :)

I think the technology is good and it will be convenient for the shoppers. However I would be worried about the shopping trolleys being left out on the streets, getting abandoned as the cost of replacing these trolleys would end up costing more for the customers at Coles

There’s more potential for collisions in the aisles. Looking at the screen while absentmindedly pushing the trolley creates even more distractions.

I’m not real quick at picking up on new technology, so I could imagine this would be frustrating for me.
This, in turn could lead to a new type of road rage; aisle rage. 😉

What a trolley full of rubbish....is this just another way to sack staff as they won't be needed anymore. Are people really that time poor that they need to have a shopping trolley do everything for them.
This world is just getting so pathetic 😪

Seems to be missing something here......if you don't need a CHECK OUT per se....then WHERE do you pack your groceries.??

With all the listed features of these innovative trolleys, I would expect that Coles would include 'wheel locking' to stop the damn things leaving the store carpark.

I'm forever messaging the trolley collectors to come get abandoned trolleys that are an eyesore.

Keeping them within store carparks would also stop them being dumped in parks/waterways.

The retrieval of stolen trolleys costs us via product pricing.

So now we are also not hiring the personal shoppers ??? Why are we willing to finish work just to go and do someone else’s job. Life is hard enough
