Is this the end of $6 lettuce? Customers rejoice as the price of salad green drops to $2.50
We don't know about you, but here at the Seniors Discount Club, we love a good salad. Not only are they healthy and packed full of nutrients, but they're also very affordable, or at least, they're supposed to be.
Unfortunately, over the past few months, Aussies have been feeling the pinch when it comes to the price of one of our favourite salad ingredients: lettuce.
Since May, the cost of iceberg lettuce has jumped from $7 per head to as much as $12, leaving many of us feeling frustrated, especially since lettuce is such a staple in our diets.
The huge price increase has caused some restaurants to take drastic actions; KFC came under fire earlier this year for temporarily switching out the lettuce in their zinger burgers for cabbage as a cost-cutting measure.
However, there may finally be some relief in sight, as shoppers across the country have reported that the price of iceberg lettuce has dropped significantly in recent days.
One such shopper, Emma from Sydney, took to a popular Facebook group to share her excitement after she spotted iceberg lettuce priced at just $2.50 per head at her local Coles supermarket.
'Lettuce celebrate this miracle,' one person commented, another added: 'Good things come to those who wait.'
A third added: 'I got one for $2.99 at Aldi in Sydney yesterday and was so happy.'
Since Emma's post went viral, many other Aussies have come forward to say that they, too, have noticed cheaper prices for iceberg lettuce at their local supermarkets.
While some shoppers reported that their local supermarket still has lettuce priced at as much as $6.50, others said the price drop is a welcome relief after months of struggling to afford salad greens.
So what's causing the sudden price decrease? According to experts, it's all due to 'supply and demand'.
With more growers producing lettuce and fewer people buying it (likely due to the higher cost), supermarkets are being forced to lower their prices to attract customers.
It's a win-win for everyone involved, and we couldn't be more thrilled!
In the spirit of lettuce prices coming down, here's a delicious recipe for san choy bow - enjoy!
Ingredients:
- 1 head of iceberg lettuce (keep the leaves whole and intact)
- 250 grams of ground pork (chicken and beef are also delicious!)
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/4 cup oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 clove of garlic, minced
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 cup chicken broth
- 1/4 cup spring onions, chopped
- 1/4 cup coriander, chopped
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, combine ground pork, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sugar, garlic, ginger, salt and pepper. Mix well.
2. In a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat, add chicken broth.
3. Add ground pork mixture and cook until pork is browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes.
4. Add spring onions. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
Serve the pork mixture in the lettuce leaves, garnished with coriander. Enjoy!
We hope this trend continues and that the price of lettuce stays low for a while. After all, healthy eating shouldn't have to come at such a high cost.
