Struggling with weight management is a common experience that many can relate to, and it often becomes more difficult as we get older.

Finding safe and effective methods to maintain a healthy weight can feel overwhelming, but what if nature offered a solution that was both simple and accessible?

Researchers from the University of South Australia (UniSA) believed they may have discovered a natural cure for obesity that is gut-friendly and free from the unpleasant side effects associated with many weight-loss drugs.

The innovative treatment under investigation by UniSA’s team involved InuMCT microcapsules, which are tinier than a red blood cell and can be ingested in tablet or capsule form.

These microcapsules are a blend of spray-dried coconut, palm kernel oils and combined inulin, a liquid form of plant fibre.

This unique concoction is designed to tackle inflammation and improve metabolic markers, such as blood glucose levels, which are crucial in managing obesity and related health issues.

In a 21-day study conducted on rats with diet-induced obesity, researchers observed significant health improvements.

The rats experienced a reduction in weight gain typically associated with Western diets, which are known for their high-fat content.

On top of this, the study also reported:
  • A 15 per cent decrease in blood sugar levels.
  • A 78 per cent reduction in inflammatory markers.
  • Up to a 47 per cent decrease in liver enzyme levels.
  • An 8.3-fold improvement in protective gut bacteria.

What set InuMCT microcapsules apart from other obesity treatments was their unique approach.

‘Obesity isn’t just an issue of excess calories—it’s a state of systemic inflammation driven by complex biochemical pathways,’ UniSA’s PhD researcher Amin Ariaee stated. ‘Current treatments often overlook the role of the gut microbiome, focusing instead on downstream effects like body weight and hyperglycaemia.’

Moreover, many anti-obesity drugs disrupt the gut microbiome, causing side effects like nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhoea, which could worsen inflammation and cause rapid weight gain over time.

Ariaee emphasised that their research aims to shift this.

The InuMCT microcapsules are made from food-grade, natural products that actively promote a healthy gut microbiome, reduce inflammation, and significantly lower excess weight.

He describes the results as ‘extremely positive’ for both weight reduction and metabolic health.

The research team is still exploring the possibility of combining InuMCT microcapsules with existing weight-loss treatments to enhance their effectiveness.

Senior researcher Dr Paul Joyce shared his optimism about this natural solution’s potential to target obesity and metabolic disease while supporting gut health.

‘Our InuMCT microcapsules deliver a viable and effective means to target obesity and metabolic disease, while concurrently supporting gut health,’ he said.
‘In this way, they can regulate body weight and better manage metabolic health without the uncomfortable side effects so commonly reported with pharmaceutical obesity treatments.’

While we await further research and the potential commercial availability of InuMCT microcapsules, it’s still important to maintain a balanced diet and engage in regular physical activity.

Key Takeaways
  • Researchers at the University of South Australia have developed a natural, plant-based treatment for obesity that avoids the nasty side effects of current drugs.
  • InuMCT microcapsules, made from coconut and palm kernel oils combined with inulin, aim to reduce inflammation and improve metabolic health markers.
  • In animal studies, these microcapsules showed significant reductions in weight gain, blood sugar, inflammatory markers, and liver enzyme levels while dramatically improving protective gut bacteria.
  • Further research is underway to determine if InuMCT microcapsules can enhance existing weight-loss treatments and support gut health without side effects.

I have multiple health conditions and managed to loose 30 kg but cannot loose anymore no matter what I do as I am in a wheelchair and cannot do normal exercise.
I lost 20kg but I can’t seem to lose anymore. I’m satisfied with what I’ve lost, I’m fitter and healthier than I’ve ever been but my body just refuses to get more weight off. I would by happy to try this new natural remedy but if I have to stay as I am then so be it. I excerise most days and I got my blood sugar down to a normal reading so I’m not really stressing about losing any more.

Yay Sth Australia actually exists and does something useful and exciting that NSW hasn't done.
Yes SA is ahead ,remember Prof Petrovsky developed a Covid vaccine ( natural) that had no side effects, just 2 jabs and blocked the virus , it was sent to TGA for approval and nothing was heard about . Yet is was used overseas in Iran and was their approved one to use . Where the government pushed the bioweapons vaccine from the US ,and all the health problems they have caused not only here but world wide.

I put on 20kgs & thought the post menopausal weight gain was here to stay but a friend put me on to some natural body balancing drops that are working wonders but I'm willing to give anything natural a go.

Yes I remember him, he wasn't allowed to go to work at the Uni because he vaccinated himself with his own vaccine, but because it wasn't one of the approved ones, they said nope, you're not vaccinated so no you can't come to work!

That's an awesome achievement Grumpy, for anybody, let alone someone with limited mobility! I managed to put on 20kgs without even trying but I'm more concerned about the visceral fat around my belly and my waist measurement. I remember reading about when they said to incorporate the waist measurement into the BMI calculation because it wasn't just the weight, but where you were carrying it & it was particularly bad for heart health to be carrying a lot of fat around the middle, which is where all my excess landed.

From the 29th of April this year to around mid November I had many hospital admissions, in that time I lost 30 kgs :)

My partner is on the Ozempic, or something similar, for his diabetes type 2, he has to inject it into his belly once a week, it's been nearly a month now and he's lost 10 kilos without trying.
