Is Coles bringing back the beloved 'Down Down' ad? This video might have the answer

Here at Seniors Discount Club, we know a thing or two about nostalgia. Whether it's the sweet memory of older shopping days or the kitschy charm of an ad campaign from the 2010s, we've seen it all.

That's why we couldn't keep it to ourselves when a recent video sparked speculation that the iconic Coles 'Down Down' ad is making a spectacular comeback!

The story begins with social media user ‘jamesform1211’ just minding his own business and heading out for a bit of grocery shopping at his local Coles at the Willowdale Shopping Centre in Sydney's west. Imagine his surprise when he found the entrance blocked due to what appears to be a busy commercial shoot.

Capturing the moment in a short clip, he captioned it: 'When you turn up to your local Coles and you can't get in because they're filming a commercial.'

Now, on the surface, this may seem like nothing to write home about. Commercials get shot all the time, right? But, dear readers, it is the context here that sparked intrigue.

In the background of the clip, staff can be seen donning oversized red foam hands. They are also seen moving to the rhythm of the hit track 'Everybody Dance Now'.

Ladies and gents, could Coles be resurrecting the 'Down Down' ad campaign?

Launched in 2010 and set to the toe-tapping tune of Status Quo's hit, this campaign became deeply associated with the retail giant. The catchy jingle and foam hands became a symbol of the potential savings shoppers could snag at Coles.

The company at the time declared, ‘The Down Down campaign, which famously reunited British rock group Status Quo, was a game-changer for Coles' customer offer, reducing the price of products that customers buy regularly for months, and sometimes years at a time–in contrast to ordinary specials which generally last only one or two weeks.'

Now, after being put to rest in 2018 (though it did make a brief comeback in 2021 amid a move to reduce food costs for customers), it seems the campaign might be making its way back to our screens. Could this be true?

As of writing, Coles hasn’t responded to the speculations.

As you can imagine, this video has sparked mixed reactions from social media users.

‘Down down, prices are down to their lowest level that we had at our highest price but we'll let you think you're getting a good deal–Coles,’ one commented under the video.

Another said, ‘And that's probably going to be the ad for Coles for another 5-10 years.’

‘If I tried to go to Coles and saw this instead it would make my day,’ one customer pointed out.

But one user expressed their scepticism, ‘The prices aren’t “down down” though they’re being raised and Coles is making record profits.’

Key Takeaways

Cynic that I am - that only says that they’ll be lowering some price to their next to last raised price. So we’ll pay less than the current ticketed price but still way more than it was say, 12 months ago.
