Princess Charlene of Monaco has been reported to have 'almost died' while in South Africa.
The former-Olympian-turned-royal was reported to have undergone multiple surgeries after she contracted an ear, nose, and throat infection during her trip to South Africa to support anti-poaching charities.
A source has told Page Six that Princess Charlene lost a "worrying amount of weight" due to the infection and has had “severe sinus and swallowing issues stemming back from an earlier surgery”.
A source said that friends of the 43-year-old royal had been worrying about the Princess after the Royal Family of Monaco allegedly downplayed her condition after Prince Albert II confirmed that his wife had gone to a treatment facility.
“It is unfair that she is being portrayed as having some kind of mental or emotional issue," the source said.
“We don’t know why the palace is downplaying that she almost died in South Africa."
“She has not been able to eat solid food in over six months because of all the surgeries she has since gone through,” the source continued."
“She has only been able to take in liquids through a straw, so she lost nearly half her body weight.”
“She is definitely not losing her mind, or suffering from severe mental health issues”.
“She is exhausted by six months of surgeries and an inability to eat properly as a result of it.”
"She desperately missed her children and her husband while she was stuck in South Africa because she couldn’t travel home."
After several surgeries, the Princess finally returned to Monaco on November 8.

Concerns over the Princess’ declining health started when a photo was posted on her Instagram on October 2.
In her photo, Princess Charlene seemed to appear extremely thin and fragile.
The royal was also reported to have pulled out of an official event due to "profound general fatigue" after the photo was posted.
Prince Albert II later confirmed that his wife was dealing with “exhaustion, both emotional and physical”.
“Obviously there were consequences of her different surgeries and the procedures she underwent in the last few months,” he said.
The former swimmer married Prince Albert II of Monaco a decade ago. Since 2011, she has been a global ambassador for the Special Olympics, promoting 'respect and inclusion' for people with intellectual disabilities worldwide.
