Ah, sweet, sweet ice cream. Who remembers when they came in tins that would often end up being one of mum's containers of odds and ends around the house? We sure do!

Did you have other uses for them growing up? Tell us in the comments below!

I can also remember when you could get a “brick” - 1 gallon of ice cream in a cardboard carton

We would keep our firecrackers in one then take them to the local park on Cracker Night ( Queensland term) and we could watch everyone’s together.
I can remember a couple of occasions where a big bunger was lit then sealed in the ice cream tin. We all ran away laughing before the tin was blasted beyond repair. New tin needed for next year meant more ice cream!

Oh the uses for all sorts of tins, sewing items, nicknacks, buttons, the fun we used to have going through the button tin, I’m sure every button was kept, to this day I remove buttons off worn out clothing and put them in my button tin. I regularly donate buttons to nursing homes and seniors centre for use in craftwork. The tin that really stands out in my memory is the old arnotts biscuit tin with the hinged lid mum used for as long as I can remember as the peg tin. Eventually the lid fell off, the tin was faded and battered but it was never replaced in my mother’s lifetime. It probably still exists in a family shed somewhere.
