Hygiene expert reveals shocking reasons why sleeping with wet hair can be harmful

Do you ever feel too tired after a long day and crawl straight to bed right after a shower, hair still dripping wet?

Did you also know that this seemingly simple habit of going to bed with wet hair could potentially be harmful to your health and hygiene?

Canadian Health and Hygiene Expert Mary Further, who goes by Madame Sweat on social media, provided an insightful view into the topic through a video that went viral.

She outlined the risks of sleeping with wet hair and detailed three main problems: fungal infections, dirty pillowcases, and hair damage.

Mary's first warning is a red flag for those silently suffering from dandruff.

'If you have dandruff, it’s going to make it even worse because fungus will grow from moisture,' she said.

As fungi thrive in moist, warm environments, a damp scalp underneath the insulation of hair can provide an ideal breeding ground for them.

Next, Mary shared a simple but often neglected fact—the humble pillowcase tends to be a hotbed for fungi.

'If you haven’t already cleaned your pillowcase, you’d better get working on it after you go to bed with wet hair,' Mary explained.

Adding damp hair to this mix can fuel the fungal growth, multiplying these invisible invaders while you sleep obliviously.

Finally, Mary drew attention to an adverse aspect of sleeping with wet hair—hair damage.

'When your hair is damp, it is in a weakened state, which means it has to be treated very gently,' Mary said.

'When you’re tossing and turning on your pillow, you can actually cause breakage at the shaft of your hair, which means you’re going to actually end up with a lot more split ends.'

'So don’t go to bed with your hair wet,' she concluded.

Many of those who've watched the video shared their realisations, with one saying, 'It will also smell like dirty laundry.'

'This is 100 per cent correct,' another replied.

While a third added: 'These thoughts went through my head the other night, so I woke up and used a hair dryer.'

Mary's expertise is not just confined to personal hygiene.

She recently shared a popular video on how to deal with kitchen odours and suggested, 'Start by boiling a cup of water on the stove. Then, slice a lemon or an orange into quarters, keep the skin on and pop it in the boiling water.'

In case of a citrus fruit shortage, Mary also shared a brilliant substitute: vinegar.

'Just add half a cup of white vinegar to the cup of boiling water, and it will take away the odour,' Mary said.

The video has been viewed more than two million times.

Amongst the appreciative viewers who commented, one wrote, 'Good idea for people that live in tiny houses or campers.'
