Hosting a BBQ for family and friends

This incredible photo was taken back in 1978 and is of a man who is hosting a family and friends BBQ using a BBQ he built himself! How about the old brick and hotplate BBQ? My goodness, you don’t come across too many BBQ’s like that anymore. In my opinion, they are the best type of BBQs to cook food on - the smokiness you get from the fire just cannot be beaten! Did you have a BBQ like this back in the day? Tell us all about it in the comments below!

Just about the first thing Dad did, when we moved in to our first home in 1970 was to build a brick barbie. There was a space underneath for the wood, and plenty of that, as Dad taught building studies at a tech school. Lots of offcuts to burn.

Pretty much every weekend we would have a barbie, inviting neighbours and family. Saturday was for footy, Sunday for the barbie. Sausages and salads, a big bowl of chips, blokes with beers. And at some stage in the afternoon, Uncle Bob would lean back in his chair and look around. He'd take a sip from his beer and say: "I wonder what the poor people are doing."

1970, I moved with the family to Canberra, previous to that I helped Dad build a bigger and better BBQ on the farm. We used two Plough shares. and they we magic and the shape would drain off the fat etc.
First thing I did in Canberra was to build a Brick BBQ with a steel plate, that was being discarded, from a building site because of a defect.. but it was perfict for the BBQ (1/2 inch thick steel and darn heavy) SO I used gas burners to heat it and I never looked back ... every house I lived in had a Brick BBQ with gas burners That I built. Even in the last 5 years during warmer weather ... we have a BBQ every 2nd or 3rd night when we are home (Even when raining because we have great gazebo with a waterproof Roof ... NEVER GET SICK OF A GOOD AUSSIE BBQ.
