Home Economics Class​

They called it Home Economics, Home Science, even Domestic Science—but for many, it was the same class where students master life skills. From learning to cook meals to stitching clothes, knitting scarves, or even mastering the art of smart shopping, those classes felt like stepping into a mini world of grown-up life. At my school in England in the fifties we started from scratch by making our aprons and cleaning wooden tables correctly. We learnt all types of techniques of cooking and sewing, all without any of the modern aids we take for granted now. I remember I made a dress for my seven year old sister for my GCE exam. It was made of Viyella material and had smocking all across the front .
This really was one of the best things that have stood by me all my life and I have only stopped sewing now due to my eyesight,but I still love cooking.

At high school in the early seventies we had to do cooking and sewing as part of our Year 7-9 learning while the girls did word and metal work. It gave us all some practical life long skills.

In 1960 I was in Year 5 ( today’s year11) we had to to prepare and cook a 3 course meal and then invite someone to enjoy it with you. My Mum had to work that day so I invited our French teacher. She apparently did enjoy her meal because I received good marks for my exam. We also made. Christmas cake, iced and decorated to take home for our family Christmas. I still love cooking and sewing
