Here are eight life-saving tips frequent flyers must keep in mind

Travelling by air can be an exhilarating experience, whisking you off to far-flung destinations and new adventures.

However, amidst the excitement, it's crucial to prioritise your safety.

While air travel is statistically safer than road travel, preparing for the unexpected can make a significant difference in an emergency.

Here are eight essential tips that could save your life on a plane.

Dress for safety, not just style

When you're selecting your travel outfit, think practicality over fashion.

Opt for long pants, a sensible top, and sturdy shoes.

In an emergency, you'll need to move quickly and safely—something hard to do in thongs or high heels.

Pack your stylish attire in your carry-on and change after landing safely.

Watch the safety briefing video

It's tempting to tune out during the safety video, especially if you're a frequent flyer.

However, each aircraft is different, and so are the safety procedures.

Former pilot Trevor Jensen, with over 50 years of experience in aviation, still watches the safety video whenever he flies.

'A lot of people are embarrassed to watch it and think if they do, it may mean they aren’t a seasoned traveller,’ he shared.

It's a sign of respect for the crew and a reinforcement of vital safety information.

Plus, your attention may encourage others to watch as well.

Locate your nearest exit

During the safety briefing, make a mental note of the nearest exits.

Count the rows to the nearest front and back exits—it could be invaluable if you need to evacuate in a smoke-filled cabin where visibility is compromised.

The 'Plus Three, Minus Eight' rule

Research indicates that 80 per cent of plane crashes occur within the first three minutes after takeoff or the last eight minutes before landing.

These are the critical times to be most alert and attentive.

Once you are through these windows, you can relax, knowing the likelihood of an incident has decreased.

Keep your shoes on

You may have to walk over debris or hot tarmac during emergencies.

Jensen advises you to keep your shoes on during takeoff and landing.

If you prefer to remove them during the flight, wear slip-ons for convenience.

Fasten your seatbelt

Even when the skies are smooth, keep your seatbelt fastened.

Turbulence can occur unexpectedly, and being buckled up can prevent injuries.

Remember the incident with the LATAM Airlines flight where unbelted passengers got injured in a sudden turbulence? Don't let that be you.

Stay calm and follow crew instructions

Flight crews are trained for emergencies.

In a crisis, your best bet is to stay calm and follow their directions.

Panic can cloud judgement, so take a deep breath and listen to the professionals.

Leave your belongings behind

It's hard to leave possessions, but in an evacuation, every second counts.

Sonya Brown, a senior lecturer in aerospace design, emphasises that belongings can block exits or damage emergency equipment.

Remember the successful evacuation of a Japan Airlines flight where all passengers left their luggage behind? Follow their example.

So, remember these tips the next time you take it to the skies for a safe and enjoyable flight.
