Help save Australian wildlife by shopping at Woolworths – here’s how
- Replies 3
The holiday season is undoubtedly more enjoyable and meaningful when we can share it with other people. But, it’s also a great time to give back to those in need – and we think that should include our native Aussie wildlife too!
And Woolworths is doing its part by using one of its delicious cakes to help an honest cause.
Wombats – the short-legged, pouched-marsupial – are one of Australia’s most adored animals. The stout and sturdy wombat have long been touted as important to the environment. They are champion diggers and cultivate hard soil which aids in vegetation growth.
However, they have fallen in numbers recently, with many living on sheep farms or wheat fields. This disrupts farmers’ livelihoods and damages their crops, forcing the wombats to flee to nearby hills, where they are hunted by larger predators.
Woolworths has come up with its own way to help save the wombats. Introducing Wally the Wombat: a delightful chocolate sponge roll with creamy chocolate filling, covered in buttercream and adorned with a cute little wombat face.
These little guys are the work of Sydney-based bakery Buonissimo, and every one of them sold can help our furry little friends since Woolies will donate $1 from every sale to WIRES wildlife rescue charity.
It's a win-win situation: you can satisfy your sweet tooth while helping support WIRES, who do an excellent job caring for injured or orphaned Australian wildlife and doing their best to release them back into the wild.
Guy Brent, Woolworths Food Company Managing Director, shared: ‘Australian wildlife have had a rough few years between drought, bushfires, record rains and floods…We’re determined to help all Australians, even the furry ones.’
‘Wally the Wombat will not only help our customers have fun while entertaining this season, but support WIRES to nurture our native animals back to the wild,’ he continued.
The cake serves 10 and retails for $25.
WIRES said that it was ‘over the moon’ at the support.
Leanne Taylor, CEO of WIRES charity, said: ‘Woolworths and WIRES Food For Wildlife program has provided carers across Australia with extensive support to take care of injured or orphaned wildlife and return them to the wild.’
She added that they were ‘extremely grateful’ for the support and ‘thrilled’ with the launch of the limited-edition cakes.
Social media users from TikTok found the cake adorable – and left many ‘feeling bad’ about having to cut through the cake to eat it. You can find Woolworths’ promotional video below:
