One of our absolute favourite meals is the classic pea and ham soup. We remember coming home from school and smelling this cooking. Making this recipe will set you back roughly $26.65 if you’re shopping at Coles. As frequently mentioned in our articles, ALDI and small grocers are generally the cheapest places to shop. This recipe will give you eight servings which sets you back a maximum of $3.33 per serve. Not too bad, eh? Let’s jump into the method, shall we?

Ingredients
Approx 1kg Smoked Hock $13
200g diced middle bacon $4
2 litres Vegetable Stock $6
3 large carrots, peeled and cut into large chunks $1.20
2 onions, chopped $1
500g split peas $1.35
Black pepper, to taste 10c

Method

Put split peas in a large bowl and cover with water. Wrap in cling wrap and leave on the bench to soak overnight. You can also do this first thing in the morning if you forget.
Heat a large saucepan. Add the bacon and cook over medium heat for 2 minutes. Add onion and carrots. Sauté on medium heat for 3-4 minutes.
Remove any hard skin from the ham hock. Add the hock to the pan and let it cook for 2 minutes to release the flavour.
Add enough stock to cover the hock. Add the drained split peas to the pot. Bring to the boil and then simmer for approximately 2 hours or until meat is falling off. If the liquid level goes down, add water to ensure everything is covered.
Season with cracked pepper and serve with some crusty bread for a great meal.
This soup will keep for up to 7 days in the fridge and you can just re-heat the amount you require. If it is too thick just add water to get the correct consistency.

Pea and ham soup is right up there with Pumpkin soup as my all time favourite soups. When I was a kid in the UK it was always known as Pea Do, don't know if that was a regional thing or not or even why it was called that but you always knew you were in for a good day if mum said there was Pea Do for dinner!!:)
