Health coach recreates popular Macca's breakfast: ‘Absolutely worth trying’

Fast food doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to nutrition, but that doesn't stop millions of Aussies from indulging in favourites like McDonald's.

Health and fitness coach Rebecca Hardgrave has built a huge following online by putting her own creative twists on popular takeaway meals. Her latest trick involving a McDonald's breakfast sandwich has many fast food enthusiasts excited.


Rebecca shared this trick on social media, saying: ‘Last night I had a dream I went to McDonald's and got a bacon and egg McHash brown, so that's what we're going to do.’

She then listed the menu items included in her latest creation, ‘Basically, you get two hash browns, one for the base, a bacon and egg McMuffin without the English muffin and here's where we get a little bit wild—hotcake syrup.’

Rebecca poured the syrup into her creation and remarked, ‘It is a little bit messy, I will give it that.’


Perhaps in recognition of the irony in sharing her fast-food tip as a supposed advocate for fitness and health, she took a bite out of the sandwich and asked, ‘Is it healthy, and would I recommend this be in your diet? No. Is it absolutely worth trying, though? H*** yes.’

The video has been viewed over 160,000 times, with countless viewers tagging friends and vowing to try it themselves.

'Game changer, I know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow!' wrote one excited fan.

‘Never thought to do a hashy with hot cake syrup, but now I need to,’ another added.

Meanwhile, someone praised it as a handy gluten-free option.

A social media user left suggestions on how to save money for this sandwich, ‘Order the egg and bacon separately as individual items. It will save you a few dollars.’

Of course, indulging in your favourite fast food items is okay from time to time. But we need to remember that these foods can be unhealthy for our bodies.

In fact, in a 2018 study, higher abdominal obesity was linked to fast food consumption. Additionally, a 2019 research suggested that a higher risk of cardiovascular disease is associated with ultra-processed food.

Beata Rydyger, BSc, RHN, a registered nutritionist, said: ‘Consuming a diet that heavily relies on fast food such as McDonald’s can significantly increase the risk of chronic health conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes due to the high levels of saturated and trans fats, sodium, added sugars and additives found in these foods.’

She also emphasised that a good diet plan with a ‘diverse array of foods’ can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease.

‘A better diet plan for overall health involves consuming a balanced diet that includes a variety of whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats,’ she explained.
