Health authorities issue warning over contagious disease outbreak—are you at risk?

In a concerning development for residents of New South Wales, a scabies outbreak has been reported across four hospitals in the Illawarra Shoalhaven area.

Health officials are warning the public to be vigilant for signs of the contagious skin condition.

The outbreak, first identified at Wollongong Hospital in late July, has since seen cases emerge at Shellharbour, Bulli, and Coledale hospitals.

To date, 11 patients and 23 hospital staff have been diagnosed with scabies, highlighting the ease with which this condition can spread in close-contact environments.

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) is actively working to curb the spread of the disease.

They have initiated contact-tracing efforts to identify and inform staff and patients who may have been exposed.

‘Scabies is a common and very treatable condition,’ ISLHD Chief Executive Margot Mains said.

‘While it can be effectively managed in households, much like headlice, it can be difficult to contain, especially in a hospital setting where patients are grouped together and there is a high transit level of staff between wards.’

Scabies is caused by the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the skin, causing an intensely itchy rash.

The disease is primarily spread through prolonged skin-to-skin contact, but it can also be transmitted through contaminated bedding or clothing.

The good news is that scabies can be effectively treated with prescribed medications that kill the mites, and there are usually no long-term complications once treated.

However, the disease has an incubation period of up to six to eight weeks, meaning that individuals may carry the mites and spread the infection without showing any symptoms initially.

Symptoms to watch out for include a persistent itchy rash, particularly between the fingers, around the wrists, armpits, buttocks, and groin.

The itching often worsens at night or after a hot shower and can lead to sleep disturbances due to discomfort.

Given the outbreak, patients who have been discharged from the affected hospitals since mid-May are being urged to monitor themselves for symptoms and to seek medical advice from their GP if they suspect they may have contracted scabies.

When I had Scabies, I had to shave from neck to feet and arms, rgen a lotion pit on all the affected areas.only lasted a few days then and back at work
The embarrassments was worse than the itching.
Many moons ago I worked in a nursing home and it went through like wildfire,it was bought in by a patient from the local hospital who was admitted. It was a horrible thing for those poor old people so glad I didn’t catch it I worked in the kitchen.😊

And another stupid comment. SDC simply provides a warning; be grateful for the information and wash your clothes, self and bedding frequently.

Scabies is a parasitic mite that is so easily picked up from unclean surroundings that one tends to lack a sense of humour when one catches a horde of it. Yes, catching it happens so often when wandering around the sort of place where people live in harmony with Mother Nature. That is the sort of place where people can get the massive type of scabies infestation that when scratched continuously to alleviate the itch a bacterial infection may set in and then Mother Nature has the chance of harmonising the victim through septicaemia and death in three weeks. However, Australia has soap, clean water and in the last resort still has some useful antibiotics against septicaemia but beware anaphylactic shock if your body doesn't like them. As with lice, scabies can be killed off easily with across-the-counter medication, but unlike lice it doesn't carry typhus.

Why be embarrassed? It's just a little grub trying to live in Harmony With Nature, like sharks and humans. In our society scabies and lice have an historical association with poverty (and hence lack education, decent housing and soap and water) and why should we be embarrassed about poverty, which is more often than not happens because some bastard is trying to rip us off at our expense?

I'm glad we have been told this , my daughter lives down the coast near these areas and another grand daughter visits Wollongong regularly to visit her boyfriend and he comes to Sydney regularly so I will warn all of them.

Are you one who don't care and just spreads your diseases

I remember when I was in high school in the early 70s. Kingsgrove North High .
Scabies was going around.
I was maybe 13, a friend and myself went into the office scratching and said we thought we had scabies . Straight away the office ladies said stay where you are while I write a note. Then she told us to leave and go straight home.
We left , got some hot chips and went to a park. We spent the afternoon laying in the sun before going home.

Strange the scratching stopped as soon as we left school 😉

I don't get out normally to spread anything. Go only for rare Dr appointments as my doctor does phone appointments. Hadn't been out of the house for nearly 2 years before episode with my daughter in July. Wrong I spent Christmas day at another daughters. Well that was 7 months
