However, a new report has revealed an unintended consequence – customers are paying more for their favourite meals because restaurants and food chains are increasing their prices to offset the fees charged by these platforms.

Similarly, a lamb pita wrap, which normally costs $15.50, rises to a whopping $21 if ordered on a delivery app.

Large fast-food chains have also jumped on board, adjusting their prices to counterbalance delivery app costs. A KFC Original Recipe burger is now an extra $1.50 more expensive on Uber Eats and Menulog, while a six-pack of McDonald's chicken nuggets will cost you $8.55 on Uber Eats and just $7.50 in-store.



Addressing this issue, Ramon Castillo, Zeus Street Greek's Chief Marketing Officer, told The Age that the price difference was necessary, stating it was '100 per cent in place to offset the fees charged by third-party delivery companies.'

He added, 'The ability for our franchisees to absorb these fees in addition to our other operational costs is simply not sustainable.'

It is not only restaurants that are adjusting their prices. Woolworths supermarket has been found to be charging more for groceries on Uber Eats compared to buying them in-store. However, they maintain the same prices on their new delivery app Milkrun, which they recently acquired. In contrast, Coles has kept its product prices consistent both online and in-store.

Reacting to these findings, an Uber Eats spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au: 'Restaurants choose to partner with Uber Eats in different ways and we're proud to provide this flexibility and control to thousands of Australian small businesses nationwide.' They also stated that it was up to business owners to decide 'which items ... to list and how they price those items’.

The commissions the food delivery apps charge the restaurant or fish shop etc aren’t just passed on to those who have their food delivered. Their prices go up for instore purchases too to help recover these outrageous costs, impacting those who are able and prepared to pick up their food. So here again, us oldies are paying the price for the younger generations who can’t be bothered getting off their butts and picking up their own take away (or even think about cooking their own meal more than twice a week!!!). I know I know, there are some people who physically can’t get to the shops to pick up their take away but I believe that most businesses would be able to absorb the costs if their only delivery customers were these people.

This 'instant need' society doesnt really consider the cost when they order from these apps. I dont think it will have much impact on some who order. Until it gets completely out of hand, which it may do eventually.

I am so out of touch. My daughter usually cooks a good traditional and generous fresh roast dinner on Sunday nights. Last Sunday my adult grandson offered to provide the family with a Uber dinner. It was a shock to me. I saw the boxes and the receipt for $150 for some very overly marinated dried shreds of grey-coloured meat (pulled something, pork or chicken?) blackened chicken also heavily marinated wings and dried dry limp chips for 4. He nuked some fresh broccoli and yes it was very kind of him to relieve his working mother from cooking one Sunday night, but I can not justify the cost of this 'delivered' food. I know he uses it and a lot of pizza boxes end up in the recycle bin. What are people eating today?

Hmmmm.
I'm thinking Maria Eats in my home might rake in a few dollars.
I don't waste my time on such things. If we want take away we will drive to a shop and take it away.
That's probably why I cook so much at home. At my age, not likely I will every Uber my eats. About as close to that we would get would be to call a taxi or Uber to take us to the restaurant of our choice.

And this is surprising? - Not - of course the cafes/restaurants are going to increase their prices to compensate for the delivery costs and then some! Always on the cards & will continue to go up while idiots are happy to pay their exorbitant prices.
