Hand wringer
My mother in law had one of these attached to the middle of her double cement tubs in her laundry. She was still using this until well into the 1980s before she bought her first twin tub washing machine. She hand washed everything in one tub, put it through the wringer into the other tub to rinse it in clean water, then put it back through the wringer into a dish in the first tub, so it didn’t go back into the soapy washing water, then transferred it to the clothes basket. It was very time consuming when she washed sheets, towels etc. she washed every morning unless it was raining. By the time she bought her first washing machine only she and pop still lived at home, she had hand washed all the time when she had four kids to look after, a chook farm where she collected and sorted eggs for sale, a fruit orchard where she helped picking, sorting and packing fruit for sale, a house cow she milked every morning, there was a butter churn on the verandah where she made butter after separating the milk and cream in the separated set up in the laundry. Her laundry shelves were packed with preserved fruits and jams she made. She was a wonderful cook, she used an agar oil stove for cooking. She was a real pioneer woman right through to the 1980s when she was almost in her 60s before she started to get some mod cons to make life easier. She was also a fantastic mother in law.
