This blast from the past was taken in 1966 in Victoria. Does the bloke look familiar? Well, I heard he’s a big shot nowadays…

Kidding aside, the young man in the picture is none other than then-Prince Charles, who spent two terms in Geelong Grammar’s Timbertop campus. Accounts say he was a pretty shy, unassuming figure when he stayed there, which must have been jarring for those around him fully aware of who he was.

My parents, sister and I had been on holiday in the then May school holidays and we were on our way home on the New England Highway north of Tamworth when a group of 3 cars went past us in the opposite direction. We noticed the people in the middle car pointing to us and talking animatedly. We had been staying on a farm out near Inverell and I had been helping with farm animals so I was a ‘little’ bit on the nose and my sister said they were saying the aweful smell was coming from our car. It wasn’t until we arrived home that we found out that it was actually the young Prince who was going to stay on a typical Aussie farm during the holidays and my parents said they were probably saying “there is a typical Aussie family on holidays with all their camping gear”
