Great Canal Journeys star and actor Timothy West passes away at 90

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of one of its most respected and versatile actors.

After a remarkable career that spanned six decades, Timothy West passed away at the age of 90.

In his passing, he leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances and a profound impact on the industry.

Timothy West's extensive career spanned television, film, and theatre.

His television credits include standout roles in series such as Brass, Edward the Seventh, and EastEnders.

Throughout his career, Timothy West portrayed a wide range of characters.

He notably played Winston Churchill three times—in From Churchill and the Generals (1979), The Last Bastion (1984), and Hiroshima (1995)—showcasing his ability to embody the essence of the British prime minister.

He also made an appearance in the travel documentary series Great Canal Journeys alongside his wife, Prunella Scales.

The couple's on-screen chemistry and real-life partnership were a testament to their shared love for acting and adventure.
Since marrying Prunella Scales in 1963, West was both a husband and a steadfast companion.

In 2014, Prunella Scales was diagnosed with vascular dementia, and West cared for her throughout their marriage and her health battle.

They showcased their bond in Great Canal Journeys, where viewers saw a glimpse into their enduring love and camaraderie.

West's children, Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph, shared the news of his passing with a heartfelt statement.

'Tim was with his friends and family at the end. All of us will miss him terribly,' the statement read.

He is survived by his sister, three children and several grandchildren.

His son, Samuel West, followed in his footsteps as an accomplished actor, currently starring in All Creatures Great and Small.

Timothy West has also graced theatre stages with performances in Shakespearean classics and other theatrical masterpieces.

In recognition of his contributions, West was appointed CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 1984.

His dedication to his craft was matched by his commitment to his family and his advocacy for those living with dementia.

Alongside his wife, West worked to destigmatise the condition and shared their experiences with the condition.

With this, they encouraged others to approach dementia with understanding and compassion.

Since the news of his passing, tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans.

Broadcaster Dame Joanna Lumley highlighted West's role in raising awareness about dementia.

'Timothy really will be a huge loss, obviously, to Pru, but I think a huge loss to everybody who came to love and respect them, not just the general public, but particularly those who live with dementia,' Dame Lumley shared.

I love watching grand canals the sad thing was watching prunella deteriorating before our eyes not Timothy. I can’t believe it I’m in shock such a wonderful man R.I.P. Timothy.😢
2 wonderful actors, very sad to hear Timothy has passed away, also very sad to hear Prunella has been left on her own, I will keep watching them on the canals 😥

So sad to hear that he was fighting dementia too along with his wife Prunella. He was so caring of her in the Canal boat series. As someone who lost my husband to, Altzeimers I know only too well the ravages of this cruel disease and the need for understanding. RIP Timothy West

That’s a pretty rude response to a very sad situation because Prunella was also suffering from dementia and from their Canal boat series, I think Timothy seemed to be protecting her and also promoting knowledge about the sad incidence of dementia. So I don’t think such criticism is warranted under the circumstances
