Good news for vegans! Classic ice cream treat goes plant-based
- Replies 5
Folks, you may have noticed it already, but in the past few years, there has been a huge rise in the number of plant-based and vegan foods in grocery stores all over the country.
In addition to that, more and more Aussies are turning vegan, showing a mainstream trend of moving away from animal products and towards a more plant-based diet.
Earlier this year, a brand-new plant-based milk made its way onto the shelves of major Australian supermarkets, and it was a huge hit among shoppers! And just last month, KFC conducted a test run of their plant-based popcorn chicken, and the results were, to put it mildly, not that well-received among those who tried it.
Now, aside from fast food meals and store-bought beverages, it seems that the plant-based craze has also spread into the dessert aisle!

This summer is going to get a lot sweeter thanks to Streets' latest release, which is sure to please ice-cream lovers of all lifestyles! The one and only Golden Gaytime ice cream is now available in a plant-based version, so everyone in Australia can enjoy this classic treat.
And for those of you who might be wondering, the answer is no; the plant-based version is reportedly not any different from the original version, both in terms of its look and its flavour.
It still has the same toffee and vanilla-flavoured ice cream centre that we all know and love, sealed in a chocolate coating and covered in pieces of biscuits all over the top. Yum!
Even though it's made with plants instead of dairy, the ice cream tastes exactly the same. Credit: Buzzfeed.
'This isn't any ordinary flavour launch; this is about opening up our product to more Australians, so no matter your dietary needs or choices – we invite you to taste the difference,' said Annie Lucchitti, a spokesperson for the ice cream company.
'Australians have been buying more plant-based products than ever, and we are thrilled we could bring another Aussie classic into this domain too. Golden Gaytime has been around for over 60 years, and recreating this iconic product had to maintain the delicious expectations that come with our classic treat.'
Starting in early September, you can purchase the vegan version of these treats for $9.50 for a four-pack at Coles and other independent supermarkets.
And so, folks, what are you waiting for? You should start stocking up now, or you might not have enough by the time summer comes around!
