Gomer Pyle

Who remembers this classic TV show back in the day? Aussies watched it religiously on their black and white TVs until the early ‘70s. Jim Nabors’ portrayal of the good-natured and naive Gomer Pyle never failed to bring a smile to your face. Who could forget his signature catchphrase, ‘Shazam!’ Or ‘Golly’? But Nabors wasn’t just a one-hit-wonder. He was also an incredibly talented singer, and his version of ‘The Impossible Dream’ hit the top 20 in Australia in 1968. He went on to record several albums and singles, showcasing his romantic ballads. Sadly, Jim passed away in 2017 at age 87, but his legacy as Gomer Pyle lives on. Who else was a fan of Gomer Pyle and his hilarious antics?

Our whole family not only enjoyed watching Gomer Pyle every night but I got called Gomer at school because my surname was Pyle!

My brother and father were both called Gomer at work but dad didn’t warm to it!

My brother who was listed as G Pyle in the phonebook would regularly get prank calls like “Is that Gomer?”, “Can I speak to Gomer please?” or just a really loud “Shazam” or “Golly” ha ha ha

@Boston That's hilarious! I'm sure it must have been annoying at times, but it's definitely a funny and unique experience to have. 😂
