Going green: Government initiates program to encourage energy-efficient appliance purchases

We all know how challenging it can be to manage high electricity bills, especially during the cold winter months. But why should our budget suffer just because the temperatures drop?

The good news is that the Queensland government has introduced the Smart Energy Savers Program, designed to help Queenslanders save significantly on their energy bills each year by encouraging the use of energy-efficient appliances.

Starting in September, approximately 40,000 eligible Queensland households can take advantage of this program and claim up to $1,000 in rebates for purchasing energy-efficient appliances.

The eligible appliances include fridges, freezers, washing machines, air-conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and LED lighting.

These rebates are in addition to the existing electricity bill rebates of $550 and $1072 for senior and concession card holders, respectively.

By switching from 2-star to 4-star appliances, households have the potential to save hundreds to even thousands of dollars annually on their energy bills. Moreover, by collectively adopting energy-efficient appliances, Queenslanders can significantly reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, benefiting the environment.

Furthermore, low-income households have the opportunity to receive an additional component on top of the rebate amount.

To be eligible for this extra benefit, they must meet specific criteria set by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), such as qualifying for the Low Income Tax Offset.

The Smart Energy Savers Program is an initiative by the Queensland government seen to help residents lower their electricity bills, save on energy costs, and reduce their carbon footprint. For some, it's a win-win situation for both households and the environment.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: 'We're proud to support Queenslanders with this additional cost of living relief package…'

'We're investing a record $8.2 billion in concessions this financial year to help ease cost of living pressures and help Queenslanders. This includes the biggest electricity bill support package in the nation, which comes on top of these rebates.'

Energy and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni added: 'The Smart Energy Savers Program is just another way the Palaszczuk Government is helping households save on electricity bills, following this year's nation-leading energy rebates.'

'This rebate program not only helps Queenslanders purchase new household appliances, but it also means they save money and help lower emissions for years to come.'

The rebates will be available until the $22 million allocated for the program is exhausted.

Please note - a registration of interest is not an application and does not guarantee eligibility for a rebate. Households will need to apply for a Climate Smart Energy Savers rebate, using the correct application form, when applications open.

I know he is pretty bad that’s why victorians are leaving the state. We have the best weather that’s why people move to qld not for any other reason. Our hospitals are a shamble. Roads are a mess ,qld doesn’t exist if you live outside of Brisbane and the gold coast we are the forgotten ones. Enough said I’m sure u get the picture.

So let me get this right , spend $500 to $600 to get $1,000 ,who has a lazy $600.00 lying around ,what's going on with this Government in QLD . Please just give we old age pensioners a go.
She is buying votes again - like she did last time - remember!

Don't you think other states have those problems as well. Nsw and Victoria for one
Not for us in regional QLD - don't call for an ambulance - don't need a doctor and don't need a hospital - don't get old and don't get pregnant.

I for one am grateful for any assistance. I therefore say thank you to our State Govt. I won't complain when we have so many services in Australia, but it isn't a bottomless pit.

Hi Leenie, actually Victoria has the worst premier! Andrews has stooped to a new low by stopping aid for children with a disability having an assistant at school. This is after his election promise that he will stopping the fight the parents have to go through to gain funding, as he will allocate the funding for the children to attend school with the assistants they need.
He is the worst !!

Regional NSW is not much better but that is also a choice of life living Regional
Prefer the bush to over crowded, crime riddled, germ laden cities any day - to share our space with the animals and birds beats that hands down and we will deal with what comes our way here. We have unfortunately had the experience, which won't be repeated, with QLD's diabolical health system.
Yes it is our choice to live in regional and it is our choice to care for ourselves now. I have been a carer for my husband since 2009, I retired at 71 in 2020 - my husband is stage 4 Parkinsons and he will never be treated as he has by our health system again and neither will I. So yes we have made our choice and when we kick on there will be no outside "help" asked for.

Not for us in regional QLD - don't call for an ambulance - don't need a doctor and don't need a hospital - don't get old and don't get pregnant.
What is the population of this regional town?
