Going green: Government initiates program to encourage energy-efficient appliance purchases

We all know how challenging it can be to manage high electricity bills, especially during the cold winter months. But why should our budget suffer just because the temperatures drop?

The good news is that the Queensland government has introduced the Smart Energy Savers Program, designed to help Queenslanders save significantly on their energy bills each year by encouraging the use of energy-efficient appliances.

Starting in September, approximately 40,000 eligible Queensland households can take advantage of this program and claim up to $1,000 in rebates for purchasing energy-efficient appliances.

The eligible appliances include fridges, freezers, washing machines, air-conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and LED lighting.

These rebates are in addition to the existing electricity bill rebates of $550 and $1072 for senior and concession card holders, respectively.

By switching from 2-star to 4-star appliances, households have the potential to save hundreds to even thousands of dollars annually on their energy bills. Moreover, by collectively adopting energy-efficient appliances, Queenslanders can significantly reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, benefiting the environment.

Furthermore, low-income households have the opportunity to receive an additional component on top of the rebate amount.

To be eligible for this extra benefit, they must meet specific criteria set by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), such as qualifying for the Low Income Tax Offset.

The Smart Energy Savers Program is an initiative by the Queensland government seen to help residents lower their electricity bills, save on energy costs, and reduce their carbon footprint. For some, it's a win-win situation for both households and the environment.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: 'We're proud to support Queenslanders with this additional cost of living relief package…'

'We're investing a record $8.2 billion in concessions this financial year to help ease cost of living pressures and help Queenslanders. This includes the biggest electricity bill support package in the nation, which comes on top of these rebates.'

Energy and Public Works Minister Mick de Brenni added: 'The Smart Energy Savers Program is just another way the Palaszczuk Government is helping households save on electricity bills, following this year's nation-leading energy rebates.'

'This rebate program not only helps Queenslanders purchase new household appliances, but it also means they save money and help lower emissions for years to come.'

The rebates will be available until the $22 million allocated for the program is exhausted.

Register your interest to be notified when the Climate Smart Energy Savers applications open.

Please note - a registration of interest is not an application and does not guarantee eligibility for a rebate. Households will need to apply for a Climate Smart Energy Savers rebate, using the correct application form, when applications open.

Key Takeaways

  • The Queensland Government is offering up to $1,000 in rebates for purchasing energy-efficient appliances.
  • The new $22 million Smart Energy Savers program is expected to help Queensland households save hundreds to thousands of dollars annually.
  • Low-income and all other households will be eligible to claim rebates on selected appliances, with additional support for low-income households.
  • This rebate program is part of an $8.2 billion package aimed at easing the cost of living pressures for Queenslanders, including the country's biggest electricity bill support package.

Members, if you're a Queensland resident looking to switch to energy-efficient appliances, you can take this as your sign.

And if you're considering investing in a slightly more expensive 4-star energy-efficient appliance, remember that not only can you get the substantial rebate, but you'll also be able to save a bundle on your electricity bills in the long run.

Well, back on topic = I think it is a terrific initiative by the Qld Govt. I replaced a couple of old air cons a while back and it made a significant difference to the power bill. It is definitely a good long term saving. Looking forward to replacing old power thirsty dryer!

U are so right, just over 12 mths away she knows her time is up .
Prefer the bush to over crowded, crime riddled, germ laden cities any day - to share our space with the animals and birds beats that hands down and we will deal with what comes our way here. We have unfortunately had the experience, which won't be repeated, with QLD's diabolical health system.
Yes it is our choice to live in regional and it is our choice to care for ourselves now. I have been a carer for my husband since 2009, I retired at 71 in 2020 - my husband is stage 4 Parkinsons and he will never be treated as he has by our health system again and neither will I. So yes we have made our choice and when we kick on there will be no outside "help" asked for.

Totally agree country people are the most genuine you will find and now our labor run state is the crime capital of Australia nothing for labor to be proud of.

I think QLD actually has one of the best premiers along with WA
Take your pick from Gladstone to the Cape and west to the border - what does population have to do with it?

Nothing to do with population, it’s the quality of the people

The low income tax rebate finished on 30 June 2022. It is no longer a tax rebate it has been cancelled.
Hi, speaking as an accountant still working a little at 72, the low income tax offset of $700 still exists in 2023. The Morrison government introduced an additional tax offset during Covid called the low and middle income tax offset, worth about $1000. This was a temporary measure and it came to an end for the 2022 financial year. Thus it is this one that is not available in the 2023 tax year.

Just waiting for the Victorian government to follow and do the right thing.

So let me get this right , spend $500 to $600 to get $1,000 ,who has a lazy $600.00 lying around ,what's going on with this Government in QLD . Please just give we old age pensioners a go.
So a state government offers assistance to people on low income and people complain!

This is an initiative to help you with financing the replacement of whitegoods with new ones when necessary, which can be when they stop working or to replace an old item with a more energy efficient one to help you save on energy costs.

Surely, that's a good thing, isn't it? So why would anyone in their right mind whinge about it!

By the way, I don't live in Queensland.
