GMV issues recall for popular models—should you be concerned?

Engine reliability is something most drivers take for granted—until something goes terribly wrong.

A widespread automotive issue has recently come to light, prompting urgent action from one of the world’s biggest carmakers.

What began as a technical concern has now triggered a global response that could impact thousands of motorists.

General Motors faced a massive recall, affecting over 700,000 cars globally, due to a critical engine problem in several of its models.

Around 10,000 vehicles in Australia were caught up in the recall, primarily impacting models with 6.2-litre ‘L87’ V8 engines.

The affected vehicles included the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pick-up truck, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban four-wheel-drives, GMV Sierra, Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

Despite the engine issue, Chevrolet’s Corvette range was not affected, though it shares the same engine type.

A spokesman for GMV stated: ‘There are approximately 10,000 vehicles across ANZ impacted by the recall’.

When asked about engine failures in Australia and New Zealand, he said: ‘At this time, we are not able to comment on engine failures relating to this issue in Aus and NZ’.

The company’s local arm assured customers that ‘the safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible’.

The recall was prompted by engine issues, where internal parts such as the crankshaft and connecting rods were found to be prone to failure.

GM had already faced complaints in the United States regarding the engine failure, with dozens of cases reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In response, GM committed to inspecting the affected vehicles to determine their safety and repair the issues at no cost to customers.

This recall followed a separate major recall by Ford, which involved the 3.0-litre ‘Lion’ V6 engine in the Ford Ranger and Everest models.

Ford recalled almost 13,500 vehicles after identifying a potential engine fault that could lead to stalling, causing a sudden loss of power while driving.

The camshaft sprocket failure, according to Ford, could lead to a stall with ‘no prior warning to the driver’.

Both GM and Ford’s recalls underscore the importance of addressing critical engine issues that could pose a serious safety risk to drivers.
