Glass of beetroot reduced Blood pressure by 7 percent
According to a British study, one glass a day would be enough to reduce blood pressure by 7%.
The benefits of beetroot against high blood pressure are due to its high nitrate content.
These nitrates improve the passage of oxygen to certain parts of the body (including the brain) that lack it and thus help reduce the pressure of circulating blood.
Published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, the study was conducted on 8 women and 7 men with hypertension who were not taking any medication.
They had to drink 250ml of beetroot juice or water containing a small amount of nitrates.
Their blood pressure was monitored over 24 hours.
At the end, the participants taking beetroot saw their systolic pressure* decrease by 10 mmHg, compared to those drinking water.
The effect was especially pronounced in the 3 to 6 hours following intake but remained constant over 24 hours.
