Gen Z’s rant about the 'unhinged' experience of shopping at ALDI: 'My heartbeat's racing'

Hilarity ensued after an Aussie TikToker called her first-ever ALDI shopping experience 'unhinged' as she vented her frustrations when it comes to shopping in the German supermarket.

'I am of the very strong opinion you need to be moderately to severely unhinged to shop regularly at ALDI,' said Rom, who goes by the handle @romaneevirgara, in her video on TikTok.

In Rom's opinion, the first 'red flag' is the fact that customers must have a gold coin or token onhand to use a shopping trolley.

The next issue for her is the grocery chain's layout, which is usually disorganised and quite a challenge to navigate. We guess for a first-timer, it could be tricky!

'I'm in there. I'm trying to find bananas. I've walked past a three-piece aluminium dining set, a saxophone starter kit, two kilos of pickled quail eggs – where are the freakin' bananas?' she said in the clip.

'Then once you've torn your hair out and fought your ADHD to get your three ingredients on your shopping list that's taken you 75 minutes, you have to head to the register,' Rom went on to say.

Apparently, the next problem with the supermarket is at the register. 'And as I'm walking towards that register, my palms are sweaty, my heartbeat's racing, my breathing's become jagged with the fear of what's about to unfold,' said the shopper.

Aside from its budget-friendly grocery items and homewares offerings, ALDI is popularly known for its speedy checkout process, in which shoppers pack their own groceries after having them scanned by a cashier.

After that, we get to hear Rom use some rather 'colourful' language to explain the store's checkout process, which was followed by a hilarious fictional description of her shopping experience.

'You get there, the shop assistant grunts at you and starts f***ing throwing groceries at you. You're dodging and weaving…' she said as she acted out the imaginary scenario.

'Then if you survive that, you're packing your own stuff at lightning speed, and then you've got to get out there and get your coin back!' she continued her monologue while keeping a blank expression the entire time.

Rom went on to say that returning a shopping cart was like taking an 'intelligence test' and that she had to stand there for about three minutes trying to figure out what was going on before a helpful shopper came over to assist her and explained what she needed to do.

But at that point, she was already so confused about everything that she barely understood what her fellow shopper just told her. 'Lady, I've got three brain cells left,' said Rom.

The hilarious clip resonated with thousands of fellow ALDI shoppers on the platform, many of whom said they could relate to Rom's frustrations when shopping at the German store.

'Try adding 3 kids under 6 to the mix,' one user wrote in the comments section.

'The anxiety at ALDI checkouts kills me,' a second person commented.

Meanwhile, a third said that in their local ALDI, it's the other way around – bananas are actually the first thing people see when they walk in.

'I also know plenty of Coles that need coins for the trolley. But yes, it is stressful,' they said. 'Mind you, I have perfected the ALDI checkout now. And much cheaper than Coles/Woolies so worth the stress, haha.'

Presume it's supposed to be funny, but it's not, and it won't make her famous

If it's true, I doubt she had three brain cells to begin with

I don't find Aldi particularly stressful at all, I quite enjoy a leisurely stroll around seeing what's new. Admittedly, you do have to buy things you want when you see them as they are gone by the time you go back to the store. At the checkout I just chuck it all in the trolley and sort at my leisure at the packing bench.

As only a part time Aldi shopper in Melbourne I find the everchanging item layout time consuming. But far and away the worst part is the checkouts, Five checkouts, NEVER more than two open at any one time, always a queue of shoppers with laden trolleys in each line, and me with 3 or 4 items trying to be patient grrrrr 😤

Well I don’t know which Aldi she is going to but the bananas are always in the front with the fruit and veg. I didn’t think she was funny pain in the A.. Was more like it she needs more common sens.

Her parents must be SO proud...NOT. She obviously never had ANY brain cells. I'm not a giant Aldi fan but all credit to them for being the only grocery store who made carts available with a coin. ALL the stores should do that. Freaking Coles and Woolies especially...their carts are left as junk and hazards everywhere...and they could care less. I told them at the service counter about the locations of abandoned carts...they couldn't have been more uninterested...they took no notes at all...I even asked "do you even care", and got the answer "nope". Disgusting. No wonder groceries are SO expensive when these stores willingly keep buying more carts because they're too lazy to gather the abandoned carts. And the shameful shoppers who use and abandon them should be banned from using carts altogether. BUT that said, this issue could be easily fixed if a coin was required. Most people want their coin back and if they do abandon the cart, a kid or homeless person will return the cart. Win, win. Another GREAT solution is what's also done overseas where an electronic strip is embedded around the periphery of the car park and a device is on the cart. If anyone tries to push the cart out of the car park, the cart's wheels lock. Perfect solution. It's yet another simple solution that stores in Australia are behind the rest of the world on.

And Aldi bananas are about five steps inside main door so she's not only stupid, she's sadly blind too.

Sorry but these Tic Tokers and so-called 'influencers' get way too much attention (and unearned money) by just using their phones.

Absolute Moron bananas are at the entrance, coins jump out when trolley is returned. Keeps the trolleys off the roads or dumped by irresponsible morons like this one.
