From Bulk Buys to Big Savings: Is This Budget-Friendly Retailer Cheaper Than ALDI?

Feeling the cost-of-living pinch? You're not alone. Many Aussies are looking for smart ways to stretch their hard-earned money, and one name that's been making waves is Costco.

You heard it right – the beloved American supermarket chain has made its way Down Under with 15 stores scattered all over the country, and it's quickly becoming the go-to destination for savvy Aussie shoppers looking to save big on their weekly grocery bills.

But Costco is not your typical supermarket. It's capturing the hearts and wallets of Australians, helping them navigate through tough times and make their dollars go further.

What sets Costco apart from the usual suspects like Woolies, Coles, or ALDI? Let's dive in and find out!

What sets Costco apart is that it's not your typical grocery store. It's a wholesale wonderland where you can score deals by buying in bulk. Imagine getting more bang for your buck, both in terms of quantity and savings!

It's like a doomsday prepper's paradise (minus the panic), where you can stock up on everything from food to toiletries to booze and so much more – all at reduced prices.

With Costco, you can say goodbye to those frequent trips to the store and hello to stocking up on essentials that last longer, all while keeping more money in your pocket.

Plus, the thrill of discovering unique finds and exclusive products that you won't find elsewhere adds an element of excitement to the shopping experience.

Now, we know what you might be thinking – a store that charges an upfront $60 annual membership fee? It's understandable to feel a tad apprehensive. But according to several savvy shoppers, that membership fee is worth its weight in gold!

Imagine saving over $500 on your grocery bill! That's exactly what one savvy mum recently shared on Facebook, and her haul from Costco was nothing short of impressive.

With ample freezer space, this smart shopper stocked up on essentials like mince, pork, and beef, all divided into convenient 1kg lots and frozen for future meals.

But that's not all – her haul included snacks for her kids' school lunches, bulk pantry products, toilet paper, poppers, water, cheese, fruit, and veggies. In fact, it was enough to keep her kids fed for a good portion of the school term!

When she crunched the numbers, she found that if she had done a similar shop at Woolies or Coles, it would have cost her a whopping $1160. Even at ALDI, it would have been $985 in comparison. Talk about massive savings!

Costco's bulk-buying concept allows you to stock up on everyday essentials and treats at prices that won't break the bank. Plus, the convenience of freezing and storing items in bulk means fewer trips to the store and more time and money saved in the long run.

And it's not just snacks and pantry items that are a hit – another mum discovered the value of the supermarket's meat products. With high-quality meats available in bulk, she found that she could make her budget go further without compromising on quality.

Want to know if Costco is really the money-saving paradise it's claimed to be? Well, one journalist decided to put it to the test.

No doubt great for young families but NOT great for a single senior with 30 or so kms to drive each way. No way would I achieve parity within a year!!!!

I only went a week ago to the Casula Sydney one and I found alot of the things are cheaper .

I had purchased a 1 litre bottle of Kinkomen soya sauce at coles for $9.50 only to see the same one at Cosco for $10.00 but it was a 2litre bottle.

They also sell huge iced and decorated cakes which would cost $150 in a cake shop, Cosco sell them for $35.

They also have a petrol station next door that gives you 30c off alitre if you are a Cosco member.

Under your membership you can add one other person if they live at your address . My daughter added me.

Their meat is top quality

Huge muffins are 12 for $10

Croissants are the best we have ever had.

My daughters wedding in June is in The Hunter Valley and our family have rented a large house , we are having a 4 day whole family getaway and will be stopping at Cosco near there to bulk buy food for a couple of huge family breakfast

I'm a Costco member but it was a distance to travel (1 hr) so I only used to go when I visited family. Now they have built one closer ihave been more often. I get great savings on fuel that more than covers my annual membership. Bulk Kirklands (Costco home brand) washing pods, dishwasher pods can last almost a year, I like the larger paper towels, a friend got great savings on tyres and Spectacles and I can never leave without picking up a huge cooked chook for $6.99. Twice the size of Woolies who sell at around $10.99. I like to check out the different clothing and footwear. And goid deals on some homewards when comparing yo Harvey norman same brands. Yes. I like Costco. 😁

I don’t know where you’ve been for the last 10 or more years. Costco is already in Australia, and has been for over ten years. They are not much cheaper than the big three supermarkets. I refuse to pay an annual fee to shop in a store. Then you have to consider the distance to the store and the crowds of people waiting to get to the checkouts.

And I wonder if the additional costs incurred for things like electricity which is becoming more expensive every month and freezers are power hungry has been taken into consideration?

The nearest one to me is about an hour and a half away, so a three trip at today's price for petrol isn't all that much cheaper than my local businesses.

Yes, I agree.
I understand that a lot of people here site the excuse "I live alone, so not viable" so why not form a co-op with friends and buy certain products twice a year? And share the expense and products....where I live, I'll be lucky to see a Costco in my lifetime...country area hundreds of kms from a city...But I certainly would agree on products with friends and share...

?????? ..... I'm at a loss. Costco has been in Australia for many years now. It's not new and they have limited stores. To TOP it all off like a Bad Smell they charge people $65 Annual Fees just to allow people to shop their. They think that it's ok to treat people in this fashion. It may be ok for people living close-by and the $65 annual fees suits them and their cheap petrol but for people like myself that would have to drive there and spend about 45 minutes in the car each way and that's when there is limited traffic on the main road. Have to use main road to get there. I suppose I'm lucky that there is no Road Toll fees to add to the expenses of just driving there.

One person Posted on Facebook some photos of the items and prices at Costco. To put it mildly, they are not cheap. Plus, meat packages are $45, $65 - $150 plus. Fish, the same, absolute massive prices. Their toilet paper prices are not cheap.

Talk about a waste of $65. I pay the $59.00 annual fees for Woolworth's Extra Rewards and I try to shop smart. I did a big shop just the other day and bulk buy in cat food on sale, the coffee I use also on sale, so I purchased a few more and they expire in February 2025. I used the once a month 10% on this shop and saved just over $35.00. Together with the sale prices the ovvland with the sale prices
