Former presenter's accusations towards the ABC stirs conversation about the state of journalism

The news and current affairs landscape has seen some remarkable changes over time.

As presenters come and go and news moves at record speed, sometimes it could be hard to keep up.

A cornerstone of Australian media recently found itself at the centre of a controversy that sparked a conversation about journalistic integrity.

Liam Bartlett, a former ABC presenter and now a lead investigative journalist for Seven's Spotlight, unleashed a scathing critique of his previous employer.

'Let's not beat around the bush. The ABC's fake war crimes footage is almost a treasonous act,' Bartlett stated in an interview over the weekend.

The controversy started in a report by the ABC, which included footage of an Australian soldier in Afghanistan.

Bartlett's investigation revealed that the footage had been tampered with.

In the footage, five additional gunshots were edited in to give the false impression that the soldier fired at unarmed villagers.

'The doctoring of the audio to give the impression Australian soldiers were firing at unarmed civilians was not only against the national interest but vilified brave servicemen fighting on our behalf, in the worst possible way,' Bartlett added.

This severe allegation not only called ABC's editorial process into question but also talked about the ethical implications of misrepresenting the actions of Australian Defence Force members.

'All in all, a disgraceful act from the elite investigative journalism unit at the taxpayer-funded broadcaster,' Bartlett concluded.

After Bartlett's callout, ABC retracted the questioned footage.

The network initially claimed that the footage was removed due to an 'editing error' discovered by Spotlight.

However, it has been met with scepticism as Bartlett raised concerns about the footage months earlier, only to be dismissed by the network.

Bartlett's tenure at the ABC, including his role on the 7:30 Report in Western Australia, added weight to his accusations.

The ABC's Managing Director, David Anderson, acknowledged that the broadcaster's legal department had been warned about the doctored vision nearly two years prior but failed to act.

Anderson has also appointed ABC's former Head of News and Current Affairs, Alan Sunderland, to conduct an independent investigation.

Despite the ongoing investigation, ABC defended its investigative reporter, Mark Willacy and investigations editor, Jo Puccini, who were associated with the report in question.

Bartlett's public takedown only raised more questions about media organisations and their responsibilities to check and correct such errors.

This also highlighted the potential consequences of misrepresenting facts, especially when it comes to portraying military operations.

The implications of this scandal could affect Australians and the trust they place in the media as a whole.

As the ABC navigates this tumultuous period, the Australian public watches closely, awaiting the outcome of the independent inquiry and the broadcaster's subsequent actions.

The integrity of journalism is at stake, as is the reputation of one of the nation's most respected institutions.
Key Takeaways

  • Ex-ABC presenter Liam Bartlett criticised the ABC for a 'treasonous' act after a scandal involving doctored war footage.
  • The ABC was forced to remove the altered footage and launch an independent inquiry after Bartlett's revelation.
  • Bartlett voiced his concerns that the public broadcaster vilified Australian troops and ignored earlier warnings about the footage.
  • The ABC defended the journalists involved in the report and started conducting an independent review to determine how the error occurred.
How do you feel about the allegations against the ABC? What do you believe should be the consequences for such a breach of trust? Share your thoughts and insights with us in the comments section below.

Desk jockeys who benefit from the sacrifices our armed forces make each and every day, when in active service and then diminish their reputation through unethical means, should be sacked. It's disgraceful and must not be tolerated.

Get out from behind your comfortable, secure desk and go do something worthwhile, like serving your country.

the ABCis a fraud taken over by very un patriotic half witted bigots who feel entitled to be a opinion creator (propoganda) machine posing as a reputable news

when in fact are a private propoganda machine
A ‘dog act’ by the ABC. Bartlett callled it correctly as an act of treachery, not only on our brave service men and women but also on the Australian public. They have bitten the hand that feeds them… a dog a
I stopped watching ABC 30 years ago for the the same reason and nothing ever happens to the corrupt managers at ABC
If you haven’t watched/listened to the ABC for 30 years how can you judge it? I would rather have the ABC than the trash & rubbish the Commercial Stations produce day after day. Don’t tell me they never get it wrong.

Unfortunately what you see on these reporting programmes cannot be taken as truth anymore. I think it's all to do with sensationalism to try to get higher ratings and make people believe this is good true journalism.Sad that good stories cannot always be believed

The problem in my view is that the educational system-especially the Humanities has been infiltrated by the Far left.I came face to face with them when I was a tutor/lecturer in Drama at the university of Newcastle,NSW back in the 1990's.The Sociology Dept tried a takeover of the Drama dept and started introducing their 'material' into drama teaching. It resulted in a revolt by Drama students. The Head of Sociology made no secret of the fact they were out to undermine 'capitalist' society by deconstructing and subverting its 'foundations'. They spoke of 'cultural relativism' It seems all cultures have equal value. We should have open borders, etc. I attended a Masters Dissertation given by a Sociology graduate to a full lecture hall. She might as well have been reading from the 'Socialist Worker's Weekly'. What really scared me was the way the student audience lapped it all up as gospel. These kids are going out as teachers, lawyers, public servants, journalists and will end up in important positions in society and in the media,I thought at the time.We are now seeing the success of this infiltration policy. The Far Left trash everything they touch. They are a social and political cancer. They have used the pedagogical power of the lectern to turn Universities and schools into indoctrination centres producing brain washed students. I write this as someone who is left of centre and acknowledges Capitalism has many faults which need to be addressed. Far Left ideology does not provide a solution.
So true and well written - you only have to look at our public schools systems both primary and secondary to witness the insidious rantings by these left wing loony teachers - how dare they direct their students into socialist and dare I say it, communist ideology when these kids are so easily swayed. Australia needs to start stamping out and publicly ridiculing these subversives for what they are. The ABC is totally reflective of this with that witch on the 7.30 report followed by their so-called "news reporters". They are not worthy to be journalists a==holes.
As a mother of a serving member of the defence force, I take total umbrage with these reporters and the ABC heirachy (led at the time by Ms Ida Buttrose). How dare they tarnish the reputation of our country defenders to suit their own egos. Every person that had some input into these discredited "fables" should be held accountable to the max. At a minimum - loss of their cushy jobs with NO termination benefits -but to fit their crime, they should be charged with conspiracy to defraud the Australian public of the truth, along with personal law suits against them by every soldier etc that was defamed.

Which witch? You mean the ultra right wing Leigh Sales?

No - the current witch whose face would crack if she smiled -Sarah Ferguson - cannot watch her regardless of who she is "interviewing"
Thank you. I stopped torturing myself when the previous one was at the helm. Quite a few right wing warlocks still flourishing, though.

Agreed. It's all about ratings

Agreed. The name of the game is ratings and titillating the lowest common denominator.

People forget that so call media is only about making money for the investors.
It has never been about telling the TRUTH. As truth has a different meaning to each person.

It is wrong to alter the facts, trying to embellish the story with false misleading information. Get your facts right before you tell a story. Do not dramatize a story just to make it more compelling.

Adding "vision" "audio" for effect isn't new. In the mid-70s, when I was in secondary school, former ABC current affairs presenter and journalist, David De Vos, provided examples of how TV "news" was sometimes (then) manipulated to create false impressions. His purpose? To disabuse us of the naïve belief that if we saw it on TV news then it must be true. Remember, this was happening decades before the Web, Photoshop and AI. These innovations have made it even easier to create false impressions to manipulate viewer perceptions and thinking. None of it excuses the ABC's Afghan footage, which is a particularly egregious example of a practice commonplace across media outlets globally. With very, very few exceptions, long may we lament and say, RIP journalistic integrity 😢
Yes you can put a palm tree in the middle of a waste management area and photos or videos can make it look like a tropical
Island. Tv shows do this quite often. Do not believe what you see. Also journalists can be very particular what footage they take to show on the screen. We are not being reported but it is their take on a good story. News is entertainment.
