Former partner of ex-Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Timothy Raymond Mathieson, allegedly pleads guilty to sexual assault

Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's ex-partner, Timothy Raymond Mathieson, recently appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court to face a charge of sexual assault.

The incident allegedly occurred on March 13, 2022, in Brunswick East, and he was formally charged in May this year.

'[He] intentionally sexually touched [the complainant] by sucking her nipple without her consent in circumstances where the accused did not reasonably believe that [the complainant] consented to the touching,' the charge sheet said.

Mathieson, 66, appeared via video link from his lawyer's office, dressed in a suit and tie. During the court session, Mathieson's lawyer, Brad Penno, stated that his client would allegedly plead guilty to one count of sexual touching without consent if the prosecution agreed to withdraw the second and third charges.

The defence requested that the court consider a diversion, which could lead to Mathieson avoiding a formal conviction for the offence. If approved, the charge would not be recorded on his criminal record.

However, the prosecution has requested at least two weeks to assess whether this diversion is appropriate and to consult with the complainant.

As the legal proceedings continued, Magistrate Roslyn Porter scheduled the case to return to court in August for further deliberations.

Mathieson made no statements to the media as he left his lawyer's office in a white ute.

There is no indication that the matter in question is related to Julia Gillard or that she was aware of it.

During her time as prime minister, Gillard lived with Mathieson in the Lodge in Canberra. However, in March 2022, Gillard revealed that the couple had separated sometime before.

Julia Gillard and Tim Mathieson first met in 2004, but their romantic relationship began in 2006. When Gillard assumed the role of prime minister in 2010, Mathieson was often referred to as the 'First Bloke'—a nod to the overseas tradition of calling the wives of presidents 'first ladies'—as he took on the traditional duties associated with the PM's spouse.

As of now, a spokesperson for Julia Gillard has stated that she will not be commenting on the matter.

What is wrong with the media in this country? There should be absolutely no mention whatsoever of the ex PM in anything that this individual has gone on to do or any event that this individual takes part in. Report the facts and leave the rubbish or past associations out of it.

I wonder why this is even news!
Nothing to do with anyone else but the people involved!
Why does Julia Gillard even have to be mentioned?
If it was my ex who broke the law after we had separated then I would expect that my name would not be mentioned nor should Julia Gillard’s name be mentioned in this private matter!
Typical sensationalist news reporting!

The media are at their utterly disgusting best. So what if the accused was once involved with Julia Gillard? So bloody what - excuse my French.

I swear to God, if I ever win the Lotto, I am going to start my own PI business, and I am going to make it my business to hunt down all the dirt on the sanctimonious, opinionated, self-important journos who revel in muck-raking through everyone's personal life like they have every right to do so!

And why does THIS platform perpetuate that abysmal behavior???? Why does it insult US, presuming that we are -gasp! - simply dying to know what dirt will be served up today?

Gillard was mentioned, despite not being this man's partner for quite some time- because they could do it. When she was Prime Minister, she was treated dreadfully -it's a tenuous link.... they're awfully afraid of a woman, especially when she's intelligent and fierce and brave. She was set upon as PM for the way she spoke, dressed, even the size of her bottom! I don't recall any journalists doing this to a male PM.... but here is another opportunity to put the boot in one more time...despite her not being a part of this man's revolting story.

I have to say I wondered how this was even possible without it being on display so to speak   Certainly could not have been an opportunistic event at Friday night drinks in the local. Seems there is more to this than we are being told.

This "story could have been written in two sentences. As it is, the padding about Ms Gillard is nothing more than titillation and scandalmongering for salacious headlines.

So if he is being charged and pleading guilty to sexual assault why is he being considered for a community order or whatever it is. Is he more important than other people sent to gaol for the same offence? I think not. He should be treated the same as anyone else charged with sexual assault. There is obviously more to the story or why did the woman involved have her nipples out? Was she a topless waitress or stripper or something?
