Foodie shares trick for perfect easy-to-peel hard-boiled eggs!

Hard-boiled eggs are one of the easiest and most delicious ways to enjoy eggs.

We all love having them as a low-cost, protein-rich addition to our toasts, salads, breakfast dishes, or just simply enjoyed on their own or with a dash of salt and pepper (and maybe a little hot sauce as well).

However, we have to admit that they can also be a real pain to peel. Not many people (us included!) enjoy the challenge of peeling the shell off a stubborn hard-boiled egg.

We can never seem to get the perfect peel, and the eggs end up damaged and ugly most of the time. They don't look as picture-perfect as we want them to be, which can be frustrating!

Thankfully, a chef is here to show us the best way to peel a hard-boiled egg so that the stubborn shell slips right off, resulting in a flawless egg every single time!

Kathleen Ashmore, who manages the page Kat Can Cook on social media, revealed that the trick to making eggs easier to peel is to avoid boiling them.

Yes, you read that right, folks. She recommends not boiling your eggs at all. No, not even with a bit of vinegar or baking soda (which were all debunked as unhelpful tips as well).

Instead, this is what you should do:
  1. Place the eggs in a steamer basket inside a pot.
  2. Fill the pot with water up to the base of the basket.
  3. Heat your water, and once it begins to boil, set a timer for 14 minutes.
  4. When time is up, remove the eggs from the basket and plunge them into an ice bath to stop the cooking process.

According to Kathleen, this should create perfect hard-boiled eggs with easy-to-peel shells that slip right off your fingers.

She claims that the hot steam makes the protein from inside the egg white contract, which pulls it away from the shell membrane, making the shell easier to remove.

The egg hack was posted on Kathleen's TikTok account and managed to gain over 120,000 views, with hundreds of users commenting and affirming the trick.

One woman wrote: "Yes! 12 minutes on high and the easiest peel ever."

A second woman added: "Agree! Plus it saves energy and is much more precise because there’s no temperature drop when eggs are put in."

However, if you don't have the time to wait for steamed hard-boiled eggs (or if you don't have a steaming basket at home), another chef shares a fool-proof method of peeling eggs perfectly.

In the popular Facebook group Budget-Friendly Meals Australia, the man said he peels his hard-boiled eggs by gently shaking them in a jar.

He puts the eggs in a jar with the lid on and then he gently shakes them together, causing the eggshells to crack easily.

I've used the jar method and yes it works fine but you have to shake it hard and for quite a long while. I have never thought to steam eggs but I'll give it a go next time.:):)

I am 75 and that is the way my mother cooked her boiled eggs. Salt in the water when you are cooking them also helps get the shell off easily. Nothing new here.

Just use the oldest eggs you've got and cook from room temperature.

Put raw eggs in a pot, fill up with cold water over the top of eggs. Put on stove. When the water start boiling, turn off the gas/power, let stand for 15 min. Put eggs in very cold water. Let stand for a few min. Crush the shell on the egg in small pieces banging it on hard surface and pour cold water from the tap. Peel. The cold water is going in between the crushed shell and the cooked egg white. Peeling is a sliding breeze. And the eggs are never overcooked!!

Steaming rather than boiling is also a better way to cooked cracked eggs as it doesn't float off in the water but adheres to the outside of the shell so you get more egg to use good for salads or for chopped eggs applications.

Why all this hub-bub over a simple boiled egg? 90 years & STILL getting perfect results. Boil your egg for 12 minutes then toss it into freezing water smashing part of the egg shell for the water to slide under the shell for a few minutes. There's no easier way ..

No. 3 says "Heat your water, and once it begins to boil, set a timer for 14 minutes."
Soooo, do you leave the water boiling? Turn it down? Turn it off? Not very clear!

As soon as the eggs are cool enough to handle l just roll them on the kitchen bench to break the shell then peel.
I was taught to roll them on the draining board by a chef decades ago. It breaks up the shells and they just fall off. Have never had problems peeling eggs since 😁

The fresher the egg the harder to shell. I had that problem yesterday wanting soft boiled eggs. Place in boiling water and cook for 4 minutes. Run cold water over them to cook off. The eggs were cooked perfectly but the shells pulled half the white off. Very disappointing.
