Fly Spray

Who remembers this? Before the convenience of aerosol cans, everyone had this ingenious contraption — a spray can with its handy refillable bowl. Do you remember battling flies with this spray? There was a refillable bowl on the end that you could replenish with your favourite fly or mozzie killer. It was often referred to as ‘the Filt can’, even if you filled it up with Mortein instead. Did you know that Filt was produced by the Esso Oil Company and contained DDT? Which has been banned in Australia since 1987! Wow, times were certainly different back then. That wouldn’t happen today!

Yep I remember this used to fill it up with foul smelling mortein liquid but boy it killed everything in sight including my sense of smell

I remember going for a barbeque picnic with my Mum and Dad and 2 brothers in about 1966. Dad had one of these fly spray cans in the car and after cooking a great meal we sat down to eat. There were so many flies about also trying to indulge in the food. Four of us ended up sitting in the car to get away from the flies. But Dad grabbed the fly spray and put loads of spray around him and his meal. How he didn't end up poisoning himself I don't know. Happy to report he was ok. Definitely agree with member Sheza10 how bad this spray smelt.

The spray left an oily residue as well. God, the amount of stuff I must have breathed in during my childhood and beyond. Filthy, poisonous stuff.

I remember this only too well. Back in India we used to use this to get rid of all those pesky insects including the mossies! Good old days.

When we first arrived in Australia we lived in Sydney in Narrabeen, next to the Narrabeen Lagoon. Our first few nights, we couldn't work out what was making that whining, zinging sound around our ears. Mosquitoes, of course! Even though we'd travelled a fair bit, we hadn't come across them before. I remember my mother spraying the house like crazy every night!

Hi maryfern33 - I’m from India also and remember these well. I came here in 1965. If you know how, get in touch with me through SDC and let me know where you are from. We can exchange names, if you wish, and who knows could even have come from the same area or even studied at the same school. Look forward to hearing from you, if you are interested.

If you wanna make contact with someone on here start a conversation using the little envelope top right corner or put a @ symbol in front of their name, it will let them know some-one mentioned them in a post. Hope that helps. @Catherines

How well I remember my parents and us kids as we got older running around the house with one of these sprayers, chasing flies, mosquitoes, moths, any flying insects really, plus spiders, cockroaches etc. The same spray was used for everything. We pumped the handle as we ran and put bursts of spray everywhere. Terrible smell, but worked a treat. Seemed to be much more effective than the cans of spray we get today. We also took it with us if we were eating outside to keep flies away from our food.
