Finding Tradies

My husband has been ill of late even to the point of spending a couple of weeks in the hospital. Due to this he has been unable to do some of the basic chores around the yard, and although I used to do them we no longer have the easy start/hill climbing lawn mower any more. To cut a long story short I went to the Yellow Pages and sent messages to two ads requesting calls, which the website tells you that they will get back to you in 24 hours.🤬 Nothing, nada, non, zilch, well that was a waste of time.
So when the kid turned up to do the monthly pool service I offered him $100 to mow the lawn. To my shock, he said he didn't know how to, he'd never done it before.

Okay, I'm trying to find a certain chair to match one I already have and after a lot of googling etc. I end up on Gumtree, and you will never believe this but I found a Lawn Mower Guy who lives in my own suburb. Am I the only one a. having trouble getting tradespeople and b. shocked at where they are advertising🤨

Pleased you eventually found someone to mow your lawn. People often use Jim's Mowing because they are accountable, instead of a single person.
I have used ones like Jim's and Airtask, even Grey Army, however, they were telling me that the overheads from these franchises was getting too much and they were getting a bit pricey.

Yes, they have to pay $ to their franchise, plus they have insurance which a one person doesn't usually have. I've had issues with a one person electrician, so I always use an electrical company now. Ditto for plumbers.
A friend of mine had her window glass broken from a mowing person. He gave her a bit of cash, but it didn't cover it.

That sounds like a mission and a half! 😅 Hope your husband is on the mend. Crazy how hard it is to get a simple call back these days—like tradespeople are an endangered species! And a kid who’s never mowed a lawn? That’s a plot twist. 😂 At least Gumtree came through! Who knew it was the go-to for local tradies. Hope things get easier from here!

When looking through the local community news on Facebook folks often write in asking for recommendations for various Tradies. Many reply with pros and cons and supply positive reviews for Tradies they have employed. Word of mouth is really the best way to find good honest help these days . I often would reply on behalf of my husband before he retired.

We recently did a renovation and I found all my tradies on Airtasker.
You write what you want and what price you are willing to pay.
You will get quotes around your price and higher. But you will be surprised at how many you get.

We found a painter, a plumber, an electrician and a kitchen installer.

We have a double brick house downstairs and permalon upstairs and he painted the whole upstairs walls gutters windows and all the woodwork downs . I had quotes beforehand and the cheapest was $8000 and didn't include downstairs. The painter from Airtasker charged $4000.

He also painted 3 rooms inside plus long hallway . This included walls, ceiling and woodwork and doors for $1000

I have also used Airtasker at times when hubby couldn't cut the grass or when my daughter needed her grass cut I would pay Airtasker to do it

Great cleaning service too!
I have also had a lot of success with
HiPages, a site where you advertise what you require and will be given quotes to choose from.
Good luck and best wishes for your hubby's health.

Did you know if your husband is eligible for a home care package that the lawns can be organized to be mown through that for you. There are also community help programme's through churches that may help. For instance, Catholic Care and possibly Anglicare.:)

Yes, we are getting that now, we applied for it October 2024 and DVA only allows us 1 hour 15 minutes every four weeks and when I was getting desperate because the "grass was tickling my a**e" I needed someone until we were approved. But we still need someone, who we now have to do the off fortnight that DVA thinks the grass does not grow. Thank you for thinking of my dilemma. 🙏 It is very much appreciated.

RACV have a service where they post your request. They vet the replies, arrange a quote. they have a price ceiling for each service. If you accept the quote and have the service, RACV sends you an invoice. they guarantee the job. This is in addition to their emergency assist program.
