Find out why you’re fueling rise in phone and internet issues

In an age where staying connected is more crucial than ever, it's incredibly frustrating when the technology we rely on fails us.

Unfortunately, this frustration is becoming too familiar for many Australians, particularly those in Queensland.

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) has reported a significant increase in unresolved phone and internet issues, leaving customers feeling ignored and exasperated.

The latest data from the Ombudsman's office is alarming.

In the three months of July, August, and September, a staggering 30 per cent of complaints—that's 3,389 in total—were returned unresolved.

This spike in unresolved issues indicates something is amiss in the telecommunications sector.

Ombudsman Cynthia Gebert expressed her concern, noting that customers face many issues.

This included inconsistent service, prolonged dropouts, and sluggish responses from telcos regarding resolving these problems.

The poor customer service experiences add insult to injury, leaving many Australians at their wit's end.

Queensland is bearing the brunt of these issues, with four of the top-five highest complaint areas in the state.

During the same three-month period, Australians lodged 13,541 complaints about their phone and internet services, a 4 per cent increase compared to last year.

About 60 per cent of these complaints are related to 'no or delayed action' by the service providers.

The Ombudsman's office only recently started to present quarterly data on complaints returned unresolved, following a new follow-up process with consumers that began in July.

This process was initiated as part of an independent review to understand better how issues are being resolved—or not, as the current figures suggest.

Ms Gebert pointed out that while telcos seem to manage simple matters efficiently, they need help tackling more complex or multifaceted problems.

This is a concerning trend, as customers with more severe or complicated issues are left in the lurch.

For those experiencing ongoing issues with your phone or internet service, the Ombudsman encourages you to raise the matter with your telco first.

Don't hesitate to complain to the TIO if the issue still needs to be solved.

Remember, the service is free, fair, and independent, and it's there to ensure your voice is heard.

Notably, almost 90 per cent of complaints to the Ombudsman come from residential consumers, with the remaining 10 per cent from small businesses.

Small businesses are particularly vulnerable, with six in ten complaints about 'no or delayed action,' which can seriously affect their operations.

Brisbane, Gold Coast, Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast, and Wyndham in Victoria are the top five local government areas with the most complaints.

These areas alone account for 10 per cent of the complaints from last quarter.
Key Takeaways
  • There has been a spike in unresolved complaints to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman, with many cases being bounced back from telcos without resolution.
  • In the July to September quarter, 3389 complaints, or 30 per cent of the total, were returned unresolved, indicating service reliability and customer support issues.
  • Queensland recorded four of the top-five highest complaint areas, and overall, complaints about phone and internet services increased by 4 per cent compared to last year.
  • The Ombudsman encourages customers to address their concerns with their telco and then escalate to her office if unresolved.

My computer is no longer mine. I sit down to write and open the word processor then I’m interrupted by demand from virus, uploads, downloads, install this, shut that, it seems interminable, all I want to do is my work, sick and frustrated with IT general!

Bring back the abacus, the quill and parchment, and the passenger pigeon, I say!
I believe the pigeons were carrier pigeons they carried notes rather than passengers 🤣. I wouldn’t want to travel on one and be dropped from a great height, come to think of it I doubt they’d get off the ground would they 😂

You are correct. I believe that the passenger pigeon is now extinct.

I hear you my virus protection often acts as if it owns my computer, yesterday it took 5 hours to update my program , I do as I am told and close down everything before allowing the program to restart my computer, not being in the least bit tech savvy I trust it to do the right thing and protect the computer from attacks by whoever, yesterdays üpdate"was to add protection to any programs being run by AI, I know that I do not use AI intentionally but apparently I need protection any way, after the first update my browser and email service did not work properly, not knowing what to do about that and needing to go out I closed down and turned off the computer, after returning and turning on the computer again it proceeded to rerun the entire protection update again, I needed to use my browser (FireFox) but the same thing happened happened as before with my email program OUTLook also crashing multiple times again, it was one of those "throw the damn thing out of the window"times I do not know why what is usually a simple virus protection up date(Trend) would cause the cliches to happen and frustrated by my lack of knowledge in what to do I turned the computer off again and went to bed, this morning everything worked as normal as soon as I turned the computer on. My problem is the same as driving a car I turn the key on put it in gear and the car takes me where I want to go but I have no idea how it does it, not having any young tech savvy kids around to tell me what to do about my computer makes me severely regret not having any children but that is another story. Including my smart phone which has proved countless times that it is a lot smarter than I am

We've been with Westnet/iiNet for the last 18+ years and have no complaints about the service.
The only reason I would complain is they went from an Australian call center to an overseas call center so I have to get my partner to call them as I can very rarely understand their accents.

Did you ever see the guy that sat in his spa and sent out his drone to Bunnings with a note asking for someone to buy a sausage sizzle for him, he put the money in with the note and watched the whole thing on his camera, it was quite amusing 😂
Except he was facing a $9000 fine for doing it.

I would be changing my virus protection, it sounds like Trend isn't that good.
Iv'e been on the computer since 1999 and have had several different virus programs but the best one is the one I have now, it just sits in the bottom right corner doing it's thing without any bother to me, it runs all the time and updates itself but I do a once a week full virus scan myself.
I use Windows Security which should be built into your computer if you're on a Windows computer, or just look it up on Google.

When I use my computer, I always click update and shutdown. I never have any issues after that.

I have been using Trend for over 8 years and this is the first time I have had a problem with it, you mentioned Windows Security for some reason every time Trend updates Windows security is turned off and the computer keeps reminding me to turn it back on, I dont know why it is turned off I have not asked it too, just another example of not understanding the computer I know how to use the various programes but do not know how it works if that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense but I would be completely deleting Trend from your computer, just type in Add Remove Programs on the bottom left corner on the start menu, that will give you the choice to uninstall it instead of just deleting it.
Then I would just use Microsoft Essentials, that's all you need for virus protection.
I would also make sure you have Remote Access turned off, for that just type in Remote Access and click on the Allow Remote Access to your computer and make sure it's ticked to not allow it.
I hope this helps.

Frustrating isn't it. Some days more inspiring than others for technology.

We’re with Internode which is part of TPG/Vodafone as is iiNet. We certainly don’t have any complaints or problems as our son works for them & sorts everything out for us even when they’re not computer related. Don’t know what I’d do without him.

After having said that I just this morning had $159.99 taken from my bank account by Westnet/iiNet which is ludicrous, when all we owe them is $59.99. My partner is now on the phone with them arguing over getting a refund, god i'm angry
