We're used to seeing airbrushed images in magazines and tabloids. Photoshopping is everywhere, and we're pretty much used to it by now.
But every now and then, an image will be altered so significantly that most of us are left questioning what we're seeing.
That's exactly what happened when a certain tabloid decided to publish an article about members of the royal family – specifically, an image of Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
The Mirror published a story about members of the Royal Family during a Remembrance Day service in London last Sunday. The Princess joined her husband, Prince William, King Charles, and Queen Consort Camilla at London’s Cenotaph for the ceremony.
But the photo the tabloid chose of the Princess of Wales – which was also on the front page of their newspaper – appeared significantly altered from the original version.
People were quick to point out the change and called the tabloid out for altering the photo to the point where the Princess looks ‘ghastly’.
In the original photo, Princess Kate looks composed and reflective, while pursing her lips. In the image produced by the tabloid, she appears to have deep bags under her eyes and more prominent lines around her jaw and neck.
When put side by side, the altered photo makes the Princess – who is 41 years old – look at least 10 years older than her age.

People took to social media to question whether the news outlet had photoshopped the image deliberately.
‘What in the ever-loving God did they do to Princess Catherine’s picture?’ Said one.
A second added: ‘When I saw the image of Kate…I thought it was Photoshopped.’
‘Surely Kate Middleton doesn’t look like this?’ Another questioned.
A man placed the pictures side-by-side and shared them on Twitter. He captioned it with: ‘The Mirror must think we are stupid.’
‘Has anyone seen the real thing in print? It’s so disgusting it’s hard to believe anyone signed off on this,’ another woman wrote.
Someone chimed in and said: ‘It’s disgraceful for a publication to manipulate her image in this way. They’ve added 20 years to her face, and distorted it as if from plastic surgery.’
‘Not only disrespectful to Catherine but disrespectful to the fallen on Remembrance Day by diverting attention,’ added another.
Kensington Palace has not commented on the matter. The Mirror is also yet to release a statement answering the accusations.
