It seems that one bakery has found the perfect, creamy and decadent vanilla slice recipe with a delightful balance of crispy pastry, smooth custard middle, and shiny topping!
This bakery has been crowned the winner of The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph in Merbein, near Mildura.
On Saturday, the bakery shared a photo of their mouth-watering slice on social media and exclaimed, ‘WE DID IT!’
‘We now hold the title for 2023 Australia’s Best Vanilla Slice and (are the) winners of The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph!’
That’s right, the winning bakery is North End Bakehouse in Shepparton, Victoria!
The bakery now holds the title for 2023 Australia’s Best Vanilla Slice, beating out other places like Sharps Bakery in Birchip, Victoria, who took out second place, and Banana Boogie Bakery in Belair, Adelaide (home to Australia’s Best Sausage Roll!), who snagged third.
This sweet victory came after the bakery’s Matt Aylett worked 'very, very hard' perfecting the slice, according to the competition’s Judging and Bakeries Coordinator Anne Nash.
'He can define the difference between the pastry and the custard, making sure the custard is a vanilla custard, not a cream custard,' Ms Nash said.
'All the things that the judges will be looking for, whether the vanilla slice can stand alone in a square and not actually move, that’s the perfect vanilla slice,' she added.
Moreover, a ‘really strong, crunchy pastry’ is crucial to the Best Vanilla Slice, according to Ms Nash.
‘We make sure the custard’s perfect, pastry’s crispy, icing’s shiny, everything,’ Mr Aylett stated, crediting the perfection of his creamy and decadent vanilla slice to his 17 years of experience.
This comes after a recent win in March, where the bakery also took home Australia's Best Vanilla Slice award at the 2023 Victorian Baking Show.
