The Sydney-based finance pro took to social media recently to share some of her ‘great hacks’ for cutting costs at the supermarket.

In the video, Queenie listed her ‘hacks’ while browsing the aisles at Coles. The first thing she suggested was to plan weekly meals based on ‘what’s on special’ at the supermarket.

She explained that building your meal plan based on what’s on sale or has bonus points offered, lets you buy more food items. ‘Select discounted items that you can easily use in multiple recipes,’ she shared.

If an item you want is out of stock at Coles, Queenie claims that customers can ask for a ‘raincheck’.

She said: ‘Don’t worry if a discounted item you want is out of stock, because you can ask for a rain check. So when that item is back in stock, you can purchase it for the discounted price up to 30 days later.’ She added that you can ask a staff member for ‘raincheck’ vouchers.

Queenie’s final hack involves downloading Coles’ Flybuys app to activate and receive ‘bonus offers’ while shopping at the supermarket in-stores.

The app lets customers receive a discount on their groceries when a set amount of points have been collected.

Queenie also shared some of the best times to grocery shop at any supermarket:
  • In the morning – where shoppers can save between 10 to 20 per cent off of goods that are about to expire.
  • Before dinner – where customers can buy goods up to 50 per cent off.
  • Right before the store closes – shoppers can save up to 90 per cent off goods that are about to expire.
Of course, these markdowns are subject to availability and store policies, but other shoppers also attest to these ‘best time for grocery shopping’ hacks. You can read more about them here, and here.

Hubby has for years used the rain check option but you can only do this in store.

90 % off would be good as long as it's not expiring the next day and sadly I won't go rushing in at closing time at midnight.
