Fight insomnia with honey

Honey helps release insulin which in turn stimulates tryptophan. Remember that tryptophan is a compound that makes us drowsy. If you have trouble sleeping, have a glass of warm milk with honey before going to bed. The heat given off by hot milk will increase the effect of the tryptophan.

Why is honey good for your sleep?
There is a simple principle: the body must not end up in hypoglycemia. It is our liver which captures the glucose contained in our food and stores it in the form of glycogen. But if its reserves turn out to be insufficient, that is to say that the body finds itself in hypoglycemia, it will react to find a new source of blood sugar. The nervous system will, for example, release adrenaline, which is a hyperglycemic agent. And the adrenal gland release cortisol, which helps the liver to synthesize glucose from the breakdown of proteins. However, adrenaline and cortisol are two stress hormones that disrupt sleep.

So, by ensuring the body has sufficient glycogen reserves for eight hours of sleep, consuming honey at night limits the release of cortisol and adrenaline and thus helps you sleep better.
