Feeling nostalgic? Step back in time at this ‘retro’ Woolies!

No matter how much the modern world changes, a few things remain the same — like the feeling of pure nostalgia when you stumble upon familiar sights and sounds from years past.

If grocery shopping is your ‘thing’ (the same way taking a leisurely walk or reading a book is for others), and absolutely love a good blast from the past, then we have just the story for you!

One Australian shopper recently shared some delightful images of a Woolworths store in NSW that seems intent on giving shoppers a taste of shopping nostalgia with its intact decades-old design.

They posted photos to a Facebook page named 'Old Shops Australia', which is dedicated to retailers from the good old days, and the images received hundreds of reactions and comments from sentimental Aussies.

Taken from the Eastwood supermarket located 17 kilometres north-west of Sydney’s city centre, the customer was surprised to find the Woolworths store standing the test of time in the urban centre.

‘This is by far the least updated Woolies I’ve come across,’ he said. ‘Even the refrigerated cabinets look (dated).’

‘The differences in the colour and trim of the fridges and freezers may be more noticeable to the naked eye,’ he added.

‘Interesting to hear how many Woolies stores might be like this as most of the ones I've seen in greater Sydney are much more modern.’

Featuring the old logo and flooring introduced in the 80s and no self-serve checkouts in sight (an ideal trait for most members, perhaps?), the store had the shopper taking many others on a quick trip down memory lane.

‘Oh memories! Mum used to do the weekly groceries there when I was little in the 90s. Doesn't look like it's changed much at all!’, a woman said in the comments.

‘Nothing changed. I worked there 20 years ago,’ shared a man.

And another former employee said: ‘(This) takes me back to when I worked at Woolies 23 years ago ... Great nostalgia, the staff just need white shirts with ties.’

‘It’s like Woolies forgot, they had been lost in time,’ a fourth shared.

Many of the other commenters also responded to the post with humour, with some joking about the store’s items for sale.

'Better check the “Use-By” dates. Some items on the shelves may be collector’s items by now!' one said.

‘Did they keep the prices from decades ago?’ another said.

A third even added: ‘Rats there must be 40 years old.’

An interesting tidbit from the comments section reveals that the store is apparently set to be demolished and has been for quite some time. The development was stalled after an issue with the local council, involving a conflict of interest, surfaced. It is unknown what plans are for the store currently.

That tidbit aside, it was clear that slipping back in time was a welcome experience for those who saw the shopper’s post.

As one user wrote: 'I love “living museums” like this, the managers are probably super passionate about balancing old (and) new.'

This also isn’t the first time the vintage Woolworths caught the attention of social media users. In June of last year, people called the store ‘a relic from simpler times’ after photos of it also made rounds on Reddit.

Though it is strange that a retailer would stay the same as it was in its heyday, it's a unique experience to go back in time. It’s comforting to see that no matter what, some things will always stay the same.
Key Takeaways
  • An Australian shopper has stumbled upon a ‘retro’ Woolworths that looks like the ‘least updated’ he’s ever seen.
  • Images of the outdated store brought back many memories for members of the Old Shops Australia Facebook group.
  • Many attested to shopping at the store in their younger years, while others even said they previously worked there.
  • Some also made jokes about the store’s age, with one commenter reminding people in jest to check the use-by dates of products in the store.
  • Other commenters familiar with the Woolies store also said that it apparently has been up for demolition in the past. Its status moving forward remains unclear.
On the topic of recalling fond memories from the past, you might want to browse our Nostalgia/Yesterday’s Australia forum, if you have time.

For example, you might like to look at some iconic retailers’ facades from years ago, and what they look like now.

And you could also solve the mystery of how on Earth one Coles shopping fixture from the 70s ended up in a Woolies parking lot. Is time travel involved…?

What are your thoughts on this? Do you have a similar grocery store near you that also has features that have remained unchanged over the years?

And do you like instances like this, when you come across something that reminds you of the past?
