Famous chef's new children's book sparks outrage, pulled from shelves

In a world where cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse histories are increasingly recognised as paramount, even well-intentioned creative works can sometimes fail to reach the mark.

This was the case with British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's latest children's book, which has been pulled from sale following a backlash over its portrayal of Indigenous Australians.

The book Billy and the Epic Escape was intended to be a whimsical adventure for young readers.

However, it included a subplot that has been widely criticised for being disrespectful and perpetuating harmful stereotypes about Indigenous communities.

The controversy centred around a chapter set in Alice Springs, where the story's antagonist abducts a young Indigenous girl from her foster home in an Indigenous community.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Commission (NATSIEC) led the charge in calling for the book's withdrawal, highlighting that the narrative trivialised the complex and painful histories of Indigenous child removals in Australia.

NATSIEC chief executive Sharon Davis expressed her concerns, stating that the chapter suggested Indigenous families could be 'easily swayed by money and neglect the safety of their children.'

This portrayal, according to Davis, was not only offensive but also reinforced damaging biases that have been used to justify child removals for over a century.

The outcry prompted Jamie Oliver, who was in Australia promoting his latest cookbook then, to apologise.

He expressed his devastation at offending and emphasised that he never intended to misinterpret such a harrowing issue.

In response to the backlash, Oliver and his publishers, Penguin Random House UK, decided to withdraw the book from sale.

The publisher acknowledged that consultation with Indigenous organisations or communities had yet to occur during the book's creation, admitting that their publishing standards had fallen short.

They emphasised their commitment to making books for everyone and the responsibility that comes with it, vowing to learn from the incident and take decisive action.

Indigenous children's author Cheryl Leavy commended Penguin Random House's decision to pull the book.

She saw it as an opportunity to build relationships with First Nations communities and tell more authentic and respectful stories.

She urged the publisher to work with First Nations advisers to implement structural measures to prevent such oversights in the future.

Jamie Oliver, who first rose to fame with his TV show The Naked Chef in the late 1990s, had released his first children's book, Billy and the Giant Adventure, just a year prior.

The recent incident is a stark reminder of the importance of cultural consultation and sensitivity in storytelling, especially when it involves representations of marginalised communities.
Key Takeaways

  • The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Commission criticised the portrayal of Indigenous families in the book as harmful and perpetuating racist stereotypes.
  • Oliver and his publisher, Penguin Random House UK, admitted to failing to consult Indigenous organisations or communities during the book's creation and apologised.
  • Penguin Random House UK has committed to learning from this incident and working with First Nations advisers to prevent such occurrences.

NATSIEC Chief Executive Sharon Davis feels the story portrays that indigenous people neglect their children.
Unfortunately, in many cases they do. Along with many white people as well.
However in the town where I live there are many indigenous children roaming the streets, bedraggled, some of the poor little ones roaming the streets in the middle of winter, in their pyjamas, some if them have no tops on, the parents are nowhere to be seen.
They complain about their children and for that matter the adults, being over represented in our prisons. Why is that???
They say their children should not be in prison, but on country with their own people.
That is where they were in the first place, not being looked after, and therefore ending up in trouble.
I have many times bought sandwiches to feed some of these children and picked up little jumpers, etc from the op shop as I feel so sorry for them.
What is the answer, I don't know.
But surely it is time to let go of the past, stop blaming the white people for all their problems and become more responsible for their own actions.
White people are not the only racists. Very young children can be heard saying things like "f***off whitey, this our country". Obviously they hear this from adults.
How is there ever going to be a coming together, respect works both ways.
And before anyone starts telling me I'm a racist some of my best friend's in this town are indigenous and a lot of them agree with me.
Well said

Maybe we should design a convict's flag and go marching through our major cities claiming the rights of the white convicts? It is all rubbish and we should all just get on with each other, it's OUR country so let us all take hold of it together.
That would be the Eureka Flag.

Intergenerational transmission of trauma effects: putative role of epigenetic mechanisms -

“This series of studies provides a clear demonstration of an epigenetically mediated transgenerational biological inheritance through sperm of a behavioral trait and corresponding neuroanatomical brain changes that persist for two generations.”

“The increased prevalence of PTSD in Holocaust offspring in response to their own traumatic exposures was later found to be associated with maternal PTSD in Holocaust survivors28. “

(There are a growing number of studies that support the idea that the effects of trauma can reverberate down the generations through epigenetics.)

“As of September 2022, an estimated 280,000 Holocaust survivors were living in countries around the world, the Claims Conference said. The money for 2024 includes $535 million in direct payments to survivors, ranging from monthly pensions to a one-time annual payment of 1,250 euros ($1,365) per person.”

After 40 years denying - Germany apologised to Israel and all Jews.
The compensation payment slated for 2024 eclipses the more than $1.2 billion Germany agreed to pay in 2023.

In 1992, the Foundation for Polish-German Reconciliation was founded by the Polish and German governments, and as a result, Germany paid Polish sufferers approximately zl 4.7 billion (equivalent to zl 37.8 billion or US$7.97 billion in 2022).

It's amazing how knowledgeable you are, your internet must work very well.
Why didn't you just cut and paste it.

In the early 70's there was an aboriginal girl who was living with a family a few doors down from me. She attended the same school too. It wasn't until many years later, we found out she was a stolen generation child. Never knew what happened with her.

Removing children from their families was official government policy in Australia until 1969.

Children were removed because the Aboriginal race was seen as an embarrassment to white Australia. The aim was to strip the children of their Aboriginality, and accustom them to live in a white Australia. The tragedy was compounded when the children, as they grew up, encountered the racism which shaped the policy, and found themselves rejected by the very society for which they were being prepared.
If some Indigenous people removed from their families are now successful members of
society, it is largely in spite of their separation from their families, rather than because of it.

The notion that children were removed for their own good is particularly offensive to Indigenous
peoples given the state of the institutions to which many children were sent. Far from being saved from neglect or destitution, many were imprisoned in institutions without enough food, without enough clothes, without love.

No, I won't bother answering.
I remembered last night my mother told me many years ago there's no use arguing with a fool.
Yes, I have seen you call many people stupid fools often - which is ironic coming from you. So you cannot dispute the info, just throw crap, because you've got nothing...you do you!

Between 1910 and 1970, approximately 100000 Indigenous children were removed from their families.

Between 1930 and 1982, approximately 250000 Australian-born non-Indigenous children were removed from their families, usually unwed mothers. But do you ever hear about that? Of course not! They were termed "forcible adoptions", not "stolen children".

Just remember who was instrumental in these removals. Welfare groups and that maligned institution called the church.

Compensation paid for the survivors of the "Stolen Generation" range from $40000 in Queensland to $100000 in Victoria. In addition, in 2021, the Federal Government paid $378 million in compensation as well!

Now let's look at the Australian-born non-Indigenous children who were forcibly adopted. All they got was an apology from all state and territories, with the exception of the Northern Territory, who offered nothing! Even the then prime minister, Julia Gillard, chimed in with own apology in March 2013. Was there a cent of compensation offered to this group? Of course not!

Now there's a strong case for discrimination if I ever saw one! And not a cut and paste to be seen!

Kudos to you for rewriting the procured information in your own words. I find it easier to copy and paste the info without personal opinion. To your point I believe it has been covered in Govt. Reports - short version as below:-
Much of this also occurred due to the parents of the pregnant daughter was seen as great shame on the family. Most were sent away by parents to give birth to their illegitimate babies, knowing full well what was going to happen.

Many submissions to the Inquiry argue the Commonwealth should play a leadership role in helping to heal the wounds of past wrongs in forced adoption. This would include publicly acknowledging the many stories of distress, trauma and violations of mother-child relationships as a result of forced, coerced, or unethical adoptions.

But not all those involved want an apology. Many just want the truth to be heard, acknowledged and accepted.

More practically, the Inquiry is likely to recommend a nationally funded framework of counselling, specifically tailored to support the well-being of those affected by forced adoption. This would be developed in consultation with the key stakeholders – birth parents, their extended families and adopted people – to provide ongoing emotional support.

The scheme is open to mothers who gave birth in Victoria, or were a Victorian resident but gave birth interstate, and who were forcibly separated from their newborn babies prior to 1990.

You can also apply to this scheme if you received funding through the Forced Adoption Exceptional Circumstances Fund (ECF).

Redress outcomes provided by the scheme include a one-off financial payment of $30,000. The scheme also offers access to counselling and psychological support, and apology processes.

Our support team is available to guide you through the application process, answer questions, and assist you with any supporting information that may be required.
Not sure how many have taken up the opportunity.

And, further to my copy and past of same gazetted info as yours, and this is in my words - my Grandmother and Mother were both victims of this - Neither of them passed this info on and down the line - only discovered after they had passed - in their cases it was definitely the English/Catholic shame and they would never have come forward, no matter what $s may have been on offer. My Aunty by marriage, was of the stolen generation but never spoke or acted on it.

Poem by John Agard: (I dedicate this to the lovely (hateful) members on here who like to use the term Half-Caste)

Well pardon me, over here standing on just one leg because I'm "half-caste."

Explain yourself—what do you actually mean when you call me "half-caste"? Is it like when the famous artist Picasso mixed together red and green paint—would that canvas then be considered half-caste? Explain yourself—what do you actually mean when you call me "half-caste"? Does it mean that when sunlight and clouds mix in the sky, that creates half-caste weather? If that's how it works, then the weather in England is almost always "half-caste." In fact, some of those clouds over England are so half-caste, you could say that they are overcast. Some of those clouds are so mean and hateful, they won't let sunlight pass through at all. Yeah right. Explain yourself—what do you actually mean when you call me "half-caste"? When the composer Tchaikovsky sat down at the piano and played both the black and the white keys, was he creating a half-caste symphony?

Explain yourself—what do you mean? I'm listening to you with the good half of my ear. I'm looking at you with the good half of my eye. And when I meet you, I have no doubt you'll realise why I only offer you half of my hand to shake. And when I sleep at night, I only close half of an eye. As a result, when I dream, I dream only half of a dream. And when the moon starts shining, I only cast half a shadow because I'm only half a person. You're going to have to come back here tomorrow.

And when you do bring your whole eye, your whole ear, and your whole mind.

Only when you do that will you get to learn the other half of my story.

I love JAMIE OLIVER cookbooks.
Over the years bought each and every one of them.

And I come from both the so-called Generation's.
Convict Generation and from the other hidden (forced adoptions) Stollen Generation Era that nobody wants to talk about.
But you don't see me bitch'in even few minutes.

Your information is incorrect. "

250000 Australian-born non-Indigenous children" WRONG! This is in total and most certainly includes and in fact mostly indigenous peoples.

Your information is incorrect. "
Ahh! No.

''My name is Margaret Hamilton,'' she began. ''I'm from ALAS - Adoption Loss Adult Support. There are over 250,000 white mothers who lost their babies to forcible removal at birth by the same past illegal adoption practices as Aboriginal mothers. How do you feel personally? Should they receive an apology?''

I don't make a statement without having supporting evidence. Read more here from the Sydney Moring Herald, dated 8 December, 2010

Two more documents and articles for your perusal.

AhhhYes!
I know that Sydney Morning Herald and Mamamia (stylised as MamaM!a) is an Australian news, opinion and lifestyle website targeted at women. It was created in 2007 by former magazine-editor Mia Freedman as an online blog.) Their stories were subjective ones in Newspaper Articles.

I was looking at facts in Government Gazetted Reports which did not state “white only” (whatever that is) Australian women. In fact:-

“Forced adoption in Australia was a government policy that aimed to remove children from single, unwed mothers, and Indigenous families, among others.”

I believe the numbers quoted do include many Indigenous Australians. I cannot see the discrimination you refer to. I think around 2013 was the Govt. apology.

The Australian Government committed $11.5 million over four years to 30 June 2017 to assist those affected by forced adoptions. $5 million to improve access to specialist support services including counselling and record tracing for those affected by forced adoptions. I believe State Governments have committed extra amounts, e.g. (I think Vic Govt) the $138m scheme, to be announced by the state government (Oct 2023) mothers affected by historical forced adoption practices before 1990 can apply for $30,000 in financial compensation. They can also receive counselling, psychological support and individual apologies under the program.

I believe Shine Lawyers are open for participants for further class action if demand is there? Until it has gone through legal pathways to prove who has a valid claim (as with the stolen generation) and which other institutions are to be held accountable -it may be that it is currently a work in progress?

Certainly a dreadful initiative, however the numbers include many girls who were sent with the intent for secret adoptions…it was common in many Countries at that time. Some due to religious reasons, some because they could not afford to raise a child on their own - without parent support and many not really capable for one reason or another. No Govt. benefit assistance and no birth control available - so many reasons along side the forced.

I cannot see justification for the “white discrimination” you speak of. It was addressed in the same way and included black, white and brindle.
