Fact of the Day: Your nails could reveal secrets about your health

Ever noticed the pale crescent shape at the base of your fingernails? It’s called the lunula—Latin for 'little moon'—and it’s more than just a quirky detail.

The lunula is actually the visible part of your nail’s growth centre, the matrix, where new nail cells are made. It might look subtle, but its colour and visibility can provide important clues about your overall health.

In a healthy person, the lunula typically appears white, but if its colour changes, it could signal a potential health issue. According to Healthline, the lunula can turn blue (diabetes), red (heart failure), brown (renal failure), or other shades, each corresponding to different conditions. This is why doctors often check your nails during routine physical exams—they can reveal important clues about your well-being.

Always get my nails done. My treat. Recently found my cholesterol level was slightly above normal. Have started taking more avocado and salmon too. I don’t want the health risk. So far, no medication required! Good Dsd
A TIP: My ex, who was 10 years older than me, had very high cholesterol and was told to eat porridge/oats every day. He did and lowered his cholesterol within about 5 months, he eats oats EVERY day (for almost 40 years now) and has NEVER had a problem!
