An Indian dental clinic, Dentzz, which has been marketing cut-price dentistry services to Australians, has recently come under fire for allegations of fake online reviews, price gouging, and substandard care.

Christine Gwin, a retiree from Queensland, shared her harrowing experience after traveling to Mumbai for dental work. Initially attracted by the promise of a more affordable solution to her dental needs, Ms Gwin was quoted between $4,330 and $4,560 for extensive reconstructive work. However, upon arrival, the costs more than tripled to $16,000 after further examination, leaving her in a difficult position far from home.


Despite the unexpected price hike, Ms Gwin proceeded with the treatment, only to find herself in pain from day one. Eleven months later, she continues to suffer from constant pain, temperature sensitivity, a loss of taste, and difficulty eating. Australian dental specialists have since assessed her treatment, estimating that correcting the work done overseas could cost in excess of $50,000.


The situation was further complicated when it was revealed that the clinic's glowing testimonials, which had influenced Ms Gwin's decision, were not all they seemed. Trustpilot, an international review website, detected and removed over 650 fake reviews from Dentzz's profile. Google also took action against policy-violating content on their platform. Despite these actions, Dentzz has denied any wrongdoing, asserting the authenticity of their patient testimonials.


This incident highlights the risks associated with dental tourism, which can include unnecessary treatments, infections, and a lack of legal recourse. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) warns that while some patients may have positive experiences, others return with significant dental issues. The ADA's president, Scott Davis, emphasizes the need for government-funded dentistry in Australia to support vulnerable groups, including seniors and those on low incomes.

In 2023, a Senate committee made several recommendations to improve oral health care in Australia, including considering a Seniors Dental Benefit Scheme and moving toward universal dental care. Unfortunately, the government's response was underwhelming, with no dedicated funding and only a note of the recommendations.
