Emotional on-air moment: Olivia Newton-John's daughter shares her mum’s legacy on Sunrise
It can be an emotional rollercoaster when someone you love passes away, especially if it's someone you were extremely close with, like a parent.
That was certainly the case for Olivia Newton-John's daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, who appeared on Sunrise earlier this week to talk about Olivia's Walk for Wellness.
The walk, an annual event for the late icon's charity, raises money to support people living with cancer. Chloe and John Easterling—Newton-John’s husband—will participate in the event on October 8.
Things took an emotional turn in less than a minute as Chloe reminisced about the influences her mother had made in her life.
The overwhelming public support the singer's family has received since Olivia's passing proved to be the life raft that got Chloe through her sadness.
'The outpouring of love is, is tangible and in my darkest moments, people that I ...' she began, before becoming too emotional to continue, 'I'm sorry, it's still raw for me.'
She then continued saying that although the loss of her mother is devastating, it has inspired her to find solace in helping others going through similar situations.
‘People that I don’t even know have lifted me up, and I’ve been able to engage with people who are going through cancer, who have family members who are going through cancer and offer my heart and my ear,’ Chloe shared.
She also mentioned that it was ‘an absolute honour’ to continue her mother’s legacy with Walk for Wellness.
'I mean, there, there really isn't any greater purpose in life than to give to others and to be of service to others,’ she continued
'And I learned that from my mum from a very young age—it was either planting trees, taking care of animals,’ Chloe recalled. ‘When she was diagnosed with cancer, it was about focusing on helping other people.'
Holding back tears, she said, ‘I am grateful that she instilled that in me.’
And while others would let Chloe work her emotions out by herself, host Nat Barr quickly offered words of sympathy.
‘We all know, a lot of people watching now, will know that grief comes at you out of left field,’ she said.
‘It’s like a roller coaster, and it hits you when you least expect it. So, please don’t be sorry.’
Nat would know a thing or two about grief—she’s been open about her emotional struggles with the passing of her beloved dad, who passed from a heart condition at 61.
In one instance, she had a hard time going through an interview on The Morning Show for the Heart Foundation when her feelings sprang to the surface.
‘I thought I could do this, I’m sorry,’ she began, with apologies to hosts Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur. ‘I’m sorry, and I know you’ve just been through this Kylie like so many Australians, I’m sorry.’
‘So many Australians have this, it’s Australia’s biggest killer, 50 people are dying a day of heart disease. I don’t think we’re giving this the attention it deserves.’
‘Our family went through this 20 years ago, and like many, many, many Australian families it destroys your family, and you never forget it and you never really get over it.’
We'd like to encourage our members to take part in this meaningful initiative if they're able to..
