Elephant kills woman in India then RETURNS to trample her corpse at her funeral – “What did that lady do?”

We’ve heard several mind-boggling stories about wild animals attacking humans before but nothing will ever be at par with this one. An elephant in India shocked the world for not only mercilessly killing a woman, but also for making another appearance at her funeral and trampling her corpse.

Maya Murmu was fetching water from a well in the Raipai village, located in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha in India, when a herd of elephants approached her. As she attempted to flee, one of the elephants dashed towards the 70 year old and attacked her.

The wild animal reportedly wandered off from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, travelling about 200 kilometres from the village.

Despite being rushed to the hospital from the horrifying incident, the woman died from her severe injuries. But for the grieving family, the nightmare didn’t end there.

Several hours later, as Maya’s family members and friends gathered for her funeral, the herd of elephants made a second reappearance. Plagued with fear, the villagers ran away from the site, leaving Maya’s body behind.

One of the elephants allegedly approached Maya’s corpse, trampled her body one last time, and tossed it in the air before leaving. The herd of elephants also destroyed Mumu’s home but didn’t lay a trunk on anyone else.

"We were terrified after witnessing the elephant herd on Thursday evening. We have never encountered such a ferocious herd of elephants before." said one villager.

Lawyer and founder of conservation charity ‘Save the Asian Elephants’ Duncan McNair said that the bizarre incident is a reminder that although elephants are typically gentle, they can also be ‘dangerous and deadly’.

However, he added that cases such as this are extremely rare unless the creature is threatened or provoked.

"These endangered elephants can be deadly dangerous, particularly when provoked or abused," he explained.

“Elephants are generally benign, and passive... They don't rush out of nowhere to attack people that pose no threat to their safety, or babies or to anything like that,”

“[This incident] is surprising because it shows no provocation of the elephant..."

But thousands were left wondering what could’ve warranted such a violent reaction from the typically gentle giants. The story also quickly turned into a laughing matter on various social media platforms, with one user joking about the elephant being interviewed in a talk show.

“Oprah: So after you killed her, you went to the funeral and stomped her some more?

Elephant: Sure did.” the tweet read.

Another person tweeted: “Whatever that woman did to the elephant is the biggest mystery of the decade.”

“Live your life in such a way that no elephants travel a hundred miles to f**k up your funeral.” added a third.

“Who told that elephant where the funeral was?” asked another.

To which one more responded: “I was the bloke who told the elephant her address.”

Although there is no clear evidence, a rumour that Maya Murmu was a part of a poacher group that killed the elephant’s baby is circulating online.
