Retirement is a time to enjoy the fruits of one’s labour after a lifetime of hard work. However, for many seniors, retirement can be a financially challenging time.
Unfortunately, this challenge is becoming increasingly common as the cost of living continues to rise, and retirement savings may not be enough to support the lifestyle pensioners want to lead.
So, for many seniors, going back to work becomes necessary to provide their retirement savings with a little bit of extra help. Of course, this comes with its own set of problems, one of those being the risks that come with any job.
But sometimes, the simplest of deeds can be rewarded and that’s the case with Barbara Gillespie.
The 72-year-old tripped and injured herself while attempting to deliver a family's order earlier this month.
As seen in the security camera footage capturing her mishap, she tripped on a small step that led up to the front door of the family's home while holding a hefty load of food and beverages.
This consequently caused the food to ‘spill’ on the floor.
Without wasting time, the homeowner, Kevin Keighron, immediately rushed to her side and asked if she was hurt.
Nevertheless, Ms Gillespie apologised for dropping the order despite still struggling to get back on her feet.
'I ruined your food,' she apologised.
Kevin’s wife, Lacey, decided to upload the video on the family’s TikTok page and established a GoFundMe campaign so that Ms Gillespie would be compensated for the ‘rough fall' on their front porch in Charleston, South Carolina.
Both the video and fundraising efforts went viral overnight, prompting numerous users around the globe to show support for both the cause and the elderly worker as well.
After the overwhelming amount of funds raised by the family, the couple and two of their five children decided to visit her at the Domino's store.
The family surprised the 72-year-old with flowers and chocolate before announcing the online fundraising activity and letting her know about the $72,000 they raised from a GoFundMe page they created for her.
Now, with $390,000 raised (as of writing), the family has pledged to not take a cent of the money.
The family also announced that Ms Gillespie is finally leaving her position at Domino's and retiring with the savings she has.
'Barbara put in her 2-week notice at work yesterday! She's officially retiring! So excited for her,' Lacey said in a follow-up post.
She said that the experience hit close to home and explained that her own father worked most of his life before succumbing to cancer last year.
Barbara expressed her gratitude to the public for their support, saying that it felt nice to be a part of something 'special' and that she was grateful that people were willing to help out others in need.
Domino's has also expressed their support for Barbara, saying that she is a 'beloved member' of their team. They also said that she was awarded Team Member of the Year in 2022.
What a heart-warming story! Barbara has certainly touched the hearts of many people with her attitude and her willingness to keep moving forward despite her fall.
Amazing stories of random acts of kindness always cheer us up. Earlier this week we shared how a waitress received a tip worth thousands of dollars after providing a billionaire diner superb service in a local restaurant.
Sometimes, it's inspiring to see how a tragedy can become something wonderful thanks to complete strangers being moved by a story, connecting with it from afar, and making a difference in someone's life.
